Montezuma Swordtail - Xiphophorus montezumae

Species name: Xiphophorus montezumae

Synonym:

Common name: Montezuma Swordtail

Family: Poeciliidae

Order: Cyprinodontiformes

Class: Actinopterygii

Maximum size: 7 cm / 2.75 inches

Environment: freshwater

Origin: Central America: northeastern Mexico (Tamaulipas, northern Veracruz, San Luis Potosí).

Temperament: Peaceful

Company: Montezuma Swordtails are suitable for community aquariums with other peaceful species.

Water parameters: Temperature 20-26°C / 68-79°F; pH 7.0 – 8.0

Aquarium setup: Xiphophorus montezumae (Montezuma Swordtail) should be kept in a partly densely planted aquarium. The aquarium should offer both open areas and areas with heavy vegetation where the fishes can find cover and the females give birth to their fry. Keep more females than males.

Feeding: This Swordtail species will lik most other Swordtails and platys accept most food sources including flake food even if they prefer small live food.

Breeding: Xiphophorus montezumae (Montezuma Swordtail) are livebearers. The females give birth to their young among plants where the fry immediately hides. A single fertilization can result in several batches of fry. The females can be isolated before they give birth to increase the survival rate among the fry.
