I got my betta tonight! I'm so excited, he's gorgeous! :luxlove:
I have pics that I snapped real quick, he seems very photogenic, swimming to the front of the cup and watching. He's still aclimating to the water, so I can't put him in his temporary bowl yet. I got him a 1 gallon bowl, while his 5 gallon is cycling. He's soooo pretty!!! :D

First I have to say that the coloring on your Beta is AMAZING! Beautiful fish! And secondly... those white dots could very well be ICH, fish are often stressed out with a lot of moving around like your little guy just did.

Would it be a problem to treat him for ick just to be on the safe side? Or would that hurt him if he doesn't have it and its just spots? I have no idea what to do about these things.

Personally if I have any thought in my mind that one of my fish is sick, I treat with meds.

Do you recommend Aquarisol? I keep seeing that name in relation to fish having ick. But know some people like certain meds over others.

I've honestly never dealt with Ich... (knock on wood) I've had to deal with every other disease under the sun though. I can't really reccomend anything to ya since i've been stationed in germany for the last... well almost 4 years and the brands are somewhat different here than back in the good ol' US of A.

Hahaha Sorry I just realized the germany thing.

wohoo. you went out and baught it :D Bettas are famoulous but only if didnt kill one another lol. Their prices would higher if they could be all together in a tank. I might go out and buy 1 male and 5 females and see if they fight.

If the specs look like specs of salt its ick. If it looks cottony its probably a fungal infection. Is it just me or do betta seem to have diseases more than other fish? Is your betta going to be by himself in the 5 gallon? Some aquarium salt would help to prevent fungal infections. Hes very pretty.

Yes he'll be by himself in the 5 gal. I don't want to stress him out with any other fish. Thanks for the compliments everyone! :)

Seems like if they are gonna be sick its either when you first get them or when they get quite old. They definately are prone to being sick when you get them due to the stress. I'm not sure what to tell you about the white spots. Skarloey had a patch that looked white for a long time and now its gone away. As mentioned, if it looks like grains of salt on him then its Ick.

Maybe you could get a close up pic and post it. That may help others id the problem for you. Check your digital camera for a digital macro mode and try it out. You can get quite good close up pics if you're camera has that mode. Bettas will sometimes float still enough to get a really great pic.

I went to walmart and got some ick meds. I wanted to get a really upclose look though before I put anything in the water, so I got my little plug in "night light" and held it close to the water. Sure enough I saw more spots up at the top of his head, as well as the spots by his mouth that I originally saw. So I went ahead and put it in. The spots on the top of his head were definitely salt grain looking. Poor thing...

Damn, what a shame. Hope the little guy is going to be ok. I can't really advise as I've never even heard of ICH until I read your post

Keep us updated.

Well at least you caught it quick and he'll probably recover and be just fine after treatment.

Ich is pretty easy to treat if you aren't worried about tankmates etc.

You should be able to knock it out no problem.

Good luck to you and your fish!

Nice Betta, my wife would love one of those, but with hot Aussie summers and cold Aussie winters, it is so hard to keep temps regulated in a small tank, I was thinking of getting one of those wallhaning bubble type tanks and hanng it in our community tank for one, but then filtration would be a prob LOL.

One thing i'm not sure about is that I have a one gallon bowl for now and the med bottle said it will turn the water blue. My water isn't blue....but I put one drop in...is that ok? His fins are kind of "clumpy" looking like they're smushed together. Thats a symptom of ich I read...will that go away too?

He's eating, swimming around and stuff, so I imagine he'll be okay once the treatment starts kicking in.

Sometimes you really have to shake the heck out of the bottle - as long as you did and it isn't expired or anything it should be fine

The drop I put in looked as blue as food coloring, but it didn't turn all the water blue....maybe just a very faint tint? If even..... I mean right now it looks completely clear...
