Hi everybody I am new to this forum and need some help. I have 2 silver Arowanas that are about 5 inches long in my 55 gallon tank. I know this is a small tank but as they grow I plan on moving them to a much larger tank. I've had them for about a month and they are starting to fight alot more and one of there fins is starting to get frayed. What should I do? Place a divider? Move them to a bigger tank now? Or get rid of one of them? Or will they learn to get along? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks everyone.

First off, WELCOME!

It sounds like they are already starting to have territorial issues. Arawonas need a pretty significant tank footprint, and that 55 won't last long at all. In my opinion, I would rehome one of them or step up the timeframe on a much larger tank.

They may calm down a bit, but I wouldn't bet on it.

If you can afford the bigger tank now, then do it now.A 250 gal should be about right. They are an aggressive fish and territorial even when young.

Imo first get rid of one of the aros, then upgrade as soon as your budget allows it.

Welcome to the AC!

Yeah 55g isnt big enough for 1 aro, let alone 2.

I concur with smaug, you need to be thinking 150g+ for 2 aros

2 is 1 to many especially in a 55, i would find a home for 1 and get a larger tank for the other.1 should be ok in the 55 for about 3 or 4 months, you need to do a couple of waterchanges a week until you get a larger tank.I have 1 that is 7" and a 3" RTC in a 75 right now and they make an unbelievable mess. Oh and welcome to this wonderful forum!!!:22: thumbs2:

Thanks for all the help. Im not sure what the sex of the fish are. I have had friends who have had silver's as tankmate pairs, but maybe they were just luckier than me. I plan on getting a bigger tank as they grow. What do you think of seperating them until they get bigger?

As someone said, you can have 1 in a 55g for a few months - so if you've got 2x55g then you can do it.

I'd see if I can get a big tank ASAP if i were you

If you seperate them now and then add them again when they get bigger things could be worse. You just won't know until you actually do it. If they're going to be seperated for the rest of their lives go for it. Otherwise get a 200g for both of them or rehome one now.

My opinion.

Any suggestions on getting a reasonably priced larger tank? How much should I be looking to spend? Also in the meantime if the Aro's continue to fight will they actually kill each other?

Craigslist

Eventually one will kill the other

I've no idea the cost of a 150-200g tank so i cant help you there - sorry. If you are in Canada, a member here is trying to sell his but its a long shot

If the aros are fighting already, chances are, one is going to die. $400 for a 125 in hawaii is probably your best bet. You could try giving them more space, but I recommend seperating them immediately.

I agree u need to seperate them and dont even think of trying to reunite them in the future, serious damage could be done, 400 for a 125 is not bad i would go for that.thumbs2:
