These guys grow to about 40 inches full, but some have been reported over 60 inches.

Tank dimensions:

length: 40 inches
width: 27 inches
Height: 16 inches

That equals to 75 gallons. You need a rectangular tank for surface area.

Youll have one big catfish full grow. If youre lookin for somethin in the smaller range, try upside- down cats. I had one, and they are peaceful and max about 16 inches.:1:

weird. Mine got about 8 inches, and was still growin at a rapid rate, and I had to sell him.
Some breeds are only 3 inches tho. Mine wasnt a dwarf one.

nice, red tails do get very very large though.
My upside down was a brown guy and he had his own cave that he sat in 23.9/7 and he came out for 2 secs if there was a shower of food

The one i had was always swimming around upside down. Usually they only do that to eat, but i saw him do it almost 100% of the time. weird huh?

its fun to see them swim upside down. Mine never swan upside down because he stayed in his cave. He swam once upside down.

Mine hides alot i havent seen it in weeks to be honest, but hes cool its always upside down, back when i wa s naive to the fish world i thought upside downs were just a easy way of selling dying fish

a 75g fill not hold a redtail cat. not even close. how would put a 40" fish in a 40" tank?

a full grown redtail will require at least 250g (bare minimum).

however, as they are a bottom feeder you need to provide surface area for the fish to be happy. the generic sizing template is
length = 4x fish length
width = 2x fish length.

so a 36" rtc will need 72+"x144+". thats right 6+feet by 12+feet. thats about 1000G. unless you have somewhere you can sell or give away this fish when he gets too big for the 75, don't but it.

oh yah, the fish will most likely out grow the 75 in a year.

Yea, the average redtail cat is about 4'. If you think they wouldnt be able to turn around in anything that is less than 4' deep. That is one BIG tank.

A full grown red tail gets to 48" thats 4 foot long and then think about the actual gurth of the fish, not to be cruel you would want a tank thats 10 ft x 6 ft wide and 4 ft deep! that would be approx 1500 gallon!! You just as well build a pond.

I have had a south american redtail for about 21 months and he is approx. 22" and has grown up in nothing smaller than a 240. Now I don't know if any of you know what an african tiger fish is but my rtc ate a 12" atf.

My LFS has a Red Tail Catfish (named Bubba lol) and it's HUGE. Probably about 25-30 inches. It's a seriously big fish, I might have to take a picture sometime.
