Hi guys, thought I would post a few pics of my marine tank to show what I have so far and what I upgrades I'm looking at.

Tank 900long x 350deep x 310wide
1 x aquaclear hangon filter with floss and carbon
2 x powerheads for flow
1 x small, useless skimmer (hopefully upgrading soon)
15kg's liverock/biorock mix
1 x digital thermometer
1 x 300watt via aqua heater with thermostat
4 kg finely crushed coral sand
2 x t8 lights (adding two t5's as soon as I get my new lid)

Fish:
1 x yellowtail blue damsel
1 x radiant wrasse
2 x tomato clowns (one has grown bigger than the other, I think I have a male and female)

Inverts:
1 x heteractis crispa anem (It was white when I bought it, now it's going a brownie red colour, regaining it's zooanthilia)
1 x cleaner shrimp
6 x hermit crabs
5 x snails

I also have a 1 foot tank that I am trying to grow brine shrimp in. Any advice would be great.

My main tank has been running for about 4 months now.:19:

Please mind the course shingle in half of the tank, I'm slowly taking it out and replacing it with the coral sand

Looks good! What type of skimmer were you looking to get?

Lowflyer

Thanks Halelorf. I've been offered a RedSea Prizm Prodeluxe skimmer for free which just needs a new impeller. But if I don't end up getting that one, due to the guy living 800 miles away, then I will either look at a Macroaqua, or a Reef Octopus

What are your guys thoughts on the macroaqua? It only cost R695 here, divide that by 8 and that's around about the price in pounds.

Thanks for comments guys, I'm actually getting hair algae on my rocks at the moment, i think it's because i changed half of my substrate in one day, oops, that was a few weeks ago, so i think my tank has gone through a kind of a mini cycle. I'm not sure if I should do what I did last time and scrub the rocks and put more snails in.

Very nice job on the tank, looking good! I have the Reef Octo hang on skimmer and it works great.

Hey oldhead, thanks for the comment, do you have a tank thread that I can look at with pictures of your skimmer and all? I'd like to see if the skimmer that you're talking about is the one I'm thinking of.

I think you would be better off having the heater at the end of the sump near the return pump or running a heater on both sides. This way the water returning to the tank will be close to tank temperature.

Lowflyer

Good thinking, I think I'm gonna buy an extra heater, or maybe sell this one and buy 2 x 150 watt heaters and put at both ends as you said. Shot

I'll dig up some threads and post them here for you. Mine is the hang on back of the tank style though. Not sure if that's the type that you're looking for.

Ok cool thanks. One question about that hangon back skimmer, have you had any problems with micro bubbles in the display from it. And if so, what did you do to stop the micro bubbles, if not, then that's cool

Is this the one you're talking about

The one in your link is mislabled. This is the BH-300F and the one that I have:
http://www.reefspecialty.com/Protein-Skimmers-Octopus/c21_46/p266/Octopus-Hang-On-The-Back-Protein-Skimmer-BH-300F/product_info.html

I used to get a ton of bubbles in my display but since it has broken in I don't see too many. I've read where some people have taken a filter sock and put it over the outlet pipe and face it towards the back wall of the tank to eliminate them all together. You're always gonna get some mb's no matter what HOB skimmer you go for though, just the nature of the beast. Remember to consider the size of this skimmer also, it is QUITE large. GLHF!

Lowflyer

Oh wow, that is huge, but since I should be building a sump I can make space for a big skimmer:19:

If you're gonna go the sump route you should get an in-sump style skimmer. Octo has more than a few of them and they all get pretty good reviews.

Thanks Oldhead

Bit of an improvement don't you think? Plans so far are just to let the corals grow and keep things stable and stock slowly. I have two black saddleback clowns in the tank, a cleaner shrimp and some LPS and Soft corals. Just want to see how things go and stock with fish as I go along. I want a bicolor blennie, a scarlet wrasse, and some small non-aggressive fish. Want to focus mainly on corals. Here are the specs of the system at the moment:

Dt - 900x350x320 (lxbxh)
sump - 700x320x280
Volume altogether is about 150 litres

Flow:
1 x seio m620 (2400lph)
1 x sunsun (3000lph) blowing behind rockwork
1 x return (about 1000lph due to head)

Livestock:
2 x colony of star polyps
3 x different candy canes
1 x gorgonian
5 x different pin cusions
1 x plating monty (brown/green)
1 x frogspawn (still really small)
3 x different mushrooms
2 x colonies of zoas (1 local and 1 don't know)

2 x black saddleback clowns
1 x cleaner shrimp

CUC:
hermits and snails

Filtration:
filter floss in overflow, change it every two days
Weipro 2011 skimmer (modified from 2014 because of space)
DSB with chaeto
15kg of biorock/liverock mix

Lighting:
2 x white t5's
2 x blue t8's (very soon changing to t5's).

Bed of coral sand in display
And rocks on egg crate stand off glass.
Tell me what you guys think, I will add more photo's soonishthumbs2:

Hi mods

I just noticed that there is a salt water aquarium forum, and didn't know this when posting last year, could you please move my tank thread to the salt water aquarium journals forum?

Cheers
