When adult, females have a visibly higher body and are bulkier and a shade less colorful than the males. They have to be adult to tell the difference.

Agree with Dave 66 Comment. The male is always more colorfull than the female.

When the females fill with eggs they get really fat and have a green sheen on their bellies too.

Not that it really matters because these fish hardly ever breed in captivity, and when they do it's usually by accident and not because the owner did anything to trigger it.

Funny, they bred all the time in my large planted tanks. Never caught them at it, but half-grown juveniles continually showed up in the group in the years I kept the species.
Only loach that regularly breeds when kept in suitable numbers in sympathetic surroundings.
