Too big. Size of tank doesn't affect internal organ growth, so even if the fish gets stunted because of being in a tank that is too small. It will die from the organs outgrowing the body cavity.

Not to mention a 55g tank is only 12 inches deep. It won't take long for a channel cat to grow big enough that it will no longer be able to turn around. Id leave it in the pond.

I've kept a channel cat in a 55, and it is a fascinating fish, beautiful to look at, with lots of personality and interesting behavior. It will probably be one of your favorite fish...for a while. But within a few months it will have outgrown the tank, and you'll probably end up tossing it back in the pond. Also be advised, these critters are highly piscivorous. Any fish that can fit in its impressively big mouth will be eaten.

Might wanna get a bigger tank for game fish. I note that many game fish are too big for 55 gallons or smaller. What else would you keep in that tank? (Out of curiosity).

This was the OP first and only post and it was more than likely resolved back in July of 2019. thomasm more than likely isn't a participating member given he hasn't posted since asking this question.
