I've always been intrigued by these plecos, as common as they are, they are great little plecos to keep. They eat algae, don't grow passed 5.5 inches, are pretty docile but can still hold their own. They are very easy to breed, they have a bioload, but not as much as larger plecos. The male grows this impressive bristle snout, almost looks alien to me, let's see some pics of your BN plecos!

It might help to sex these fish for somebody who is curious, so if you could include your plecos age, that would be helpful.

I'll start this thread off with a pic of my 4 year old female brown pleco.

She is in a 90g with another brown female and a brown male pleco. Both females breed with the male.

Since I just posted a pic of the large brown male I had in another thread, I'll post a belly pic here of the male albino I had that was breeding with a brown female. Both of these have since been sold. I've also posted a pic of some of the baby BNP's I had (a little fuzzy).

Wow Sue, he has a huge belly! Biggest pleco belly I've ever seen actually. Nice very long bristles on him too! Those babies are so cute, they look to be albino, were they?

A pic of Blondie, my female albino BNP, in the 29G tank.

I have another female BNP (L183) in the 40B, but she's very hard to get a pic of, hides most of the time...Blondie never hides

Yes, she's albino...loves to dig and make a mess in the sand, especially right after I fix it back, lol

Hahaha, I'm pretty sure it was my plecos that dug at my underwater/underground cave, they dug new doors and collapsed the rocks holding the substrate back. I was told female amano shrimp dig, but I'm pretty sure it was the plecos. Lol, just like a cichlid.

I just checked out Mrs. Muir's baby vid. Wow, she's very dark and beautiful. Did you get the albino and brown mix babies from Mrs Muir and Ghost?

I'll have to get me some papaya!

Here's a few of mine.

Wow, are all those bushynose? The pleco in the second
pic looks like a gold nugget pleco or something, beautiful.

Also, what color type are the orange and brown long-finned plecos in your last pic?

Yes Mrs. Muir must have some albino in her, she is currently the only female in the pleco tub-well BN female, there are clown plecos in there too. I was hoping to remedy that Sunday when I went to our fish Swap by getting a super red or a green dragon female, but that will be pending the possible ich issue.

No, unfortunately all of the fry from this pairing of a male albino and female brown BNP were brown. They had three spawns before I finally had to make them stop!! lol The first spawn I did sell to my LFS but they wanted them larger. So I bought a 20g tank to move the fry into from their 2nd and 3rd spawns, which were quite close together. I eventually sold both of these spawns along with the female to a private buyer. Later sold the male to the LFS separately and tore that 10g tank down.

She's beautiful! Reminds me of my 4 year-old girl. Those lighter markings are what I usually see in my brown plecos. All of mine have an albino gene, does this girl?
Thanks for sharing DD!

VERY lovely pics DD! Is the lemon BN an actual color morph? All the albinos I see and own look lemon and orange. They start out white but turn colors like this guy
55105
I'll say the lighting on this tank is 5500k (RBG+10000k), it really brings out reds in fish. But do you think there are two different color morphs of albino? Or do all albino turn yellow/orange? My friend has a pair (that have never bred for him) of orange BNs and they are a bit more orange than this guy in the above pic. This guy is about a year old.

Also the smaller pleco and Aliray, are they female or young males? I've never seen little bristles on the females before, so that is interesting.

Does anyone else have females with little bristles?

DoubleDutch

This isn't an albino. It is a blue eyed one !
It was this yellow from the start.

All my BN's are females (only Rexie seems to have little bristles).

I've has a few over the years, bred super reds by the hundreds for a while, still have some in the 220.
This one was a monster, actually grew even larger, the aquaclear quickfilter is a good size reference:

Do you boil the lettuce before adding it? They seem to really love it, I'd like to try some!

I gave it a zap in the micro. But it wasn't that great of a hit, they much prefer broccoli. We just had taco salad for dinner ;) Those babies are all over anything that is presented as food within two seconds of it hitting the bottom like I haven't fed them in weeks. There are about 25 little babies and 10 young juvies, lots of mouths to feed. But I love them too much not to save from the 90g and grow out.

I found that canned green beans, particularly the french cut, are great for supplementing the diet. The french cut sink on their own, while some of the straight cut pieces tend to float unless you pinch the air bubble out of them. Just drain off the water and dump into the tank. Silver dollars, cichlids, and even Synodontis catfish (as well as most other fish IME) will also chow on the beans.
