Speaking of update, It looks like my diatome bloom is finally burning off. every day for the last week or two when I wake up I would see a tank with diatoms all over the glass and sand, I would clean the glass a couple times a day (I'm sure I was doing it wrong, I was probably supposed to leave it because by scraping the glass was probably spreading the spores) I wake up today and glass is pretty clean and the sand is starting to clear with the help of the crabs. so this is a good sign and hopefully an end of the uglies.

I'm still tinkering with flow angles and directions to make the corals happy and still tinkering with light settings. Seems the corals like more blues. I will get some pics today if I can of the corals...
Oh and btw yesterday was the 1 month anniversary of adding our first corals. So the frogspawn, zoanthid, finger leather and the gorgonian have been in the tank 1 month! yay.

today is test day so I will update later with some test results and pics hopefully.

Good to hear the diatoms are subsiding, just like Marty said they would.

Looking forward to more pics.

they are still pretty small, I would say maybe 1.5 inches. I wish I could get a good pic of the blue hairy mushroom, the last pic... it is awesome, the tips of the tentacles are fluorescent blue! I will try tonight when the lights are almost off.

Hi there, congratulations on your SW tank.

Good thing Marty was around to help you out, things are looking good as you are moving along. Did you ask your friend what type of mangrove species it is? I'd move the mangrove plant up so that it isn't fully submerged like that. It's best to place it in the upper regions of the reef tank so that the propagule can grow correctly. The stem and plant leaves should be out of the water.

Jwfish13
07-27-2016, 05:36 PM
I didn't ask what species it is, I can take it out for now, his was about a foot out of the water but it was way bigger than this one.

I really want to add a refugium to my tank but I will need help on just how I can. As you know my sump is built onto the rear of my tank not separate and under the tank like a normal system. I'm thinking I would need some sort of way for it to go from the back of my tank to the refuge that I would set up under my tank in the cabinet and pump the return back up to the sump. I'm hoping Marty or someone would have some ideas on how this could work.

Marty.h
07-27-2016, 08:18 PM
I'll be about to help anyone or if I don't see a post give me a nudge via PM ill get a notification then :)

I use to run a fuge but if you are managing to keep nutrients in check then why add one as the algae will need the nutrients to grow.

Nutrients must be fairly well in check as I don't see much algae in your tank so is there any point in mending something that's currently not broken.

The problem is with having the rear chamber is the algae needs a light source so would mean adding a light above it and would spoil the look of your tank I would personally unless you having nutrient issues just carry on as you are as it's working :)

Spardas
07-27-2016, 08:28 PM
I agree with Marty, don't mess with what's not broken unless you're dead on getting a sump/refugium.

Not completely familiar with this model but I recall that RedSea does offer upgrades for a cabinet sump. However, I haven't done the review on that or know if it's worth the money either. How many gallons is in the back and what are you using it for currently? Are you running a skimmer in the back sump?

Jwfish13
07-27-2016, 08:37 PM
The back sump area has a skimmer and return pumps

What's your current stocking, I do apologize but haven't gone through all the pages.

What's your vision for this tank?

Marty.h
07-27-2016, 08:50 PM
Like I said above I use to have a fuge but presently no longer run one my chaeto started to shrink instead of grow as there was no nutrients left for it to grow like it was I also use to run a 20w 6500k LED spotlamp over it.

Having soft corals in that tank they do like a bit of dirty water so to speak with nitrates present it's only SPS reefs like mine you want low nutrients in my opinion to lower nutrients with your coral stock will be detrimental to them :)

Even SPS reefs don't want 0 nitrates or 0 phosphate having both them at 0 is not healthy mine normally runs 2ppm nitrates and phosphate at 0.015ppm however since the doser incident I had the nitrates are now a bit higher then I would like they are now coming back down so nitrates at a certain level are not the devil they are made out to be.

Jwfish13
07-27-2016, 08:55 PM
Good to know, my nitrates are sitting at 2 ppm so I'm good there, I dint have a phosphate test kit yet. I'm doing my weekly water changes so hopefully they are in check.

Water tests today... Everything has been consistent for the past two weeks so everything is looking good.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 2 ppm
Alk: 8.5 still a tad low but its consistent and I have heard consistency is better than ups and downs.
Cal: 460
Ph: will test later at mid day

Marty.h
07-31-2016, 10:00 PM
Looking good I use to run my alk at 8.3 with no issues.

Stability is key :)

Jwfish13
07-31-2016, 10:07 PM
Thanks for the reassurance :) tested PH and it was at 8.0 a little lower than my normal 8.2 I tested it about 2 pm

Marty.h
07-31-2016, 10:28 PM
Try and test PH at the same time each time you test it as when lights off or not been on long PH will drop but 8 more then acceptable :)

Move them as you would freshwater bag everything up with tangs and fish with spikes double bag them and keep the temps good. Pack them tightly so there is no sloshing or moving around

Keep the live rock in water unless you can keep a 12v airpump in there to keep water oxiginated you will get some die off.

Congratulations on the new job and hope move goes well :)

Very nice, looks like your tank is progressing nicely. Still traces of nuisances left but they will be gone in due time but that's expected for a new tank to go through its course. When is your move and how deep is that sand bed? Do you have large foam boxes?

Jwfish13
08-13-2016, 06:53 PM
Still waiting to hear when my wifes official start date. The sand bed is about 2-3 inches... we have a few foam boxes and a few totes.

Hey Matt what picture are you referring to about the purple thing? if its in the post above the clowns it is cynobacteria I think... it some form of nuisance like Spardas was talking about... I also have some small amount of diatoms and now some green algae also... it all should clear up in a month or two hopefully. My nutrients in the tank (that cause that algae) have been holding really low. nitrate have been right around 2 ppm or lower, I still don't have a phosphate test kit yet ( I know I'm bad) but I do weekly water changes so hopefully they are in check also.

About how much $ is invested in this setup, if you don't mind me asking?

Jwfish13

Mr. Grumpy pants is his name, he is a jawfish

The red sea all in one setup was $2200 came with the rock and sand, salt because they have us a 250 dollar gift credit. Spent about $500 on coral and fish and also miscellaneous stuff like more salt and test kits and what not

Okay, so you'd want to plan.

I will assume the temperature will be room temperature in the car and the house, just make sure your new water has the same temperature.

1) Have plenty of extra salt water mixed up and ready to use.
2) Don't re-use all of the sand, just a little to cover the bottom and then top it off with new sand.
3) Put the rocks in 5 g buckets with water, corals in a different bucket.
4) Put fishes in the foam boxes, add Prime, use battery operated pump to keep the oxygen going in the box.
5) Know the rock/corals layout ahead of time so you can quickly put everything back together.
6) If you think setting up the tank will take time (hours), then just have large plastic totes filled with water ready with a heater and pump so you can just throw everything in there while you work on setting up the tank.

You can syphon the algae out on a waterchange that helps to export it out of the system :)

Jwfish13
08-25-2016, 01:12 PM
I tried that but I don't have a python, we don't have a fosset in the house that we can connect it to. So our syphon isn't strong at all. But it is beginning to clear some and as long as it doesn't another the corals or start to cover the glass I'm ok with it. It even looks kind-of good.

Looking good algae has now gone and some good growth on the SPS :)

You finding it easier now after having it for a while

Jwfish13
01-23-2017, 11:34 PM
yes, much easier. I'm running it semi-dirty, I was running GFO and that nearly messed everything up you can still see that gorgonian suffering, but it is coming back. also one of my zoa's came in-stuck and is mia. Also lost the emerald crab in the GFO mess. but still haven't lost a fish and they are growing! Now I am planning another Red Sea system, the smaller one the 18" by 18" cube.

Thanks for the update, and glad to hear things are settling in.

What's that "plant" in post 713, pic #1?

Jwfish13
01-23-2017, 11:46 PM
That is a Mangrove tree. For months it was not growing, I thought it was not going to, I even took it out and saw that it had course white roots on it about an inch long so I put it back in and finally saw growth about 5 months of being in there. all of the growth you see has been very recent.

I'm sorry I should of said it started out as a seed pod about 5-6 inches in length.

They are supposed to help a little with nutrient removal, it is more decorative than anything. It will eventually grow out of the water.

So, the "mangrove tree" is a real plant after all, and not some kind of crazy saltwater coral?

Hi Sil, thanks I was really discouraged for a long time. I just stuck with it and it is looking a lot better

Indeed it is Matt. I look forward to when it grows more. It's actually a real TREE [emoji1]

Ok its time for an update on the SW.

So it will be a year since I set this tank up in a few days. Not a lot has changed really, just "maturing". We did lose a couple corals but we have seen a lot of growth of the corals that remain.
To be clear this is a "natural" salt water environment an is also considered a bit dirtier than most people tend to keep theirs but I really like the natural look to it.
Many pictures to follow.

A couple of full-ish tank shots.

Agree, they look great and I have no idea that your tank is dirtier than others in the hobby-looks nice to me. I remember the green coral when you put it in, it got really big and has great movement. That mangrove is so cool too!

Thank you for the update, too few here dabble in the salty side-its nice to see these tanks especially since I can see yours back when you set it up, and Wow that was only a year ago...time flies.

06-01-2017, 09:40 PM
Thanks Matt and Nat. It is really the only tank that I have been successful with other than the bettas. Tetras seem to die fast in my tanks for some reason, the water is fine so who knows. Anyways we are planning on getting a bubble tip anemone soon and maybe a goby to sift the sand a bit.

I put several (20) or so snails in there at the beginning (drawing a blank on the names right now... thanks illness) but they stay buried in the sand and come out at night. and I just saw them the other night was cool. I will try and get a picture of this tonight.

Coooooooooooool!!!

I like all the things you have in there, but that GSP definitely steals the show. That, the stuff you have growing on the back wall of the tank, and the little guy poking his head out of a hole are my favorites :)

Jwfish13
06-15-2017, 09:35 PM
The little guy is Mr. Grumpypants lol everyone loves him. the GSP is considered a weed in the marine tank world because it will spread everywhere very quickly. I put that little patch on the back wall in hopes that it will grow to be a sort of background. It was about the size of two quarters when I glued it there and the other was about the size of a tennis ball. You can manage it by just slicing off pieces of it where you don't want it to grow. kind of like trimming plants. I know some of you might think this hurts the organism but it really doesn't so I have been told. That's how I got that piece on the back wall. The rock I bought it on broke in two and a little piece was stuck to that rock so I pulled it off and glued it to the back wall. there is another tiny piece somewhere in there. I hope it grows so I can find it someday lol.

BluewaterBoof
06-15-2017, 09:49 PM
Oh so the stuff growing on the back wall is the GSP, as well?

Looks really beautiful. I wonder if someone has made a tank with nothing but a huge "carpet" of the stuff. That would look amazing, IMO.

Hello everyone, I have some news about this system.
We are moving and we had to break down the tank, all livestock was donated to a local reef store.
We will be converting it to a freshwater system in our new house.

Slaphppy7
07-29-2017, 02:40 PM
Ah, that's too bad...why the move, job-related?

What about the betta and the 40B tanks?

Jwfish13
07-30-2017, 04:26 AM
The Betta tank came with us and still have plans for the 40B. Actually I'm still up in the air on fresh or salt, my wife really likes the salt water side so it might be salt again.

Slaphppy7
07-30-2017, 02:50 PM

Yeah, I haven't even gotten it yet, only made the stand. I currently have a 20L with some guppies and a ton of shrimp. It will make the move with us.

Wow, what a shocking end! I spent a few hours a day for the last 3 days catching up on your tank just to read that it's been tore down.

I hope all goes well in your move and I'll keep an eye out for a new SW journal in the future!
