My tank kit came with incandescent bulb fixtures. Can I use fluorescent instead??

Ummm, well the original kit with the tank would have had like long tube ones. But the lady I bought it from had 40W dollar store chandelier bulbs in there :/

The original ones were 15 watt incandescent bulbs. Like a tube. Short and skinny.

Medium base bulbs, the screw-in type?...like most bulbs in the past have had?

If so, then yes, a CFL (compact flourescent) will work

Slap is right. If you can find a compact fluorescent bulb with the same base as the incandescent you're trying to replace, then you're good to go. CFLs like that are intended as a direct replacement to incandescents. With that said you mention chandelier bulbs which tend to have a smaller base. I haven't seen a CFL designed to replace a chandelier / ceiling fan type incandescent, but maybe they're out there.

Also the fixture currently has 40W bulbs in sockets intended for 15W bulbs? Be careful. Using bulbs with a higher wattage than the socket is intended for is a safety hazard. Could melt or start a fire.

I never used the bulbs it came with. Except to show off the tank quickly and what not. They got so hot though I was always afraid the canopy would melt.
