View Full Version : Breeding Bettas - Success!

Alriiiiighty Then.

So in my 3 section tank I've decided to try breed bettas. Yesterday I noticed the female and male actually together at the nest, instead of the female hiding amongst the foliage. The number of eggs increased from about 9 visible to about 50 in a little less than 24 hours. (I dont mind keeping the female and male together for longer periods as theres enough foliage for the female to hide without me even being able to see her) This morning I took the female out - now to begin watching for the fry to hatch :)

I'm pretty happy with how this has all gone - now I can start selectively breeding bettas :) only thing will be storing the fry as they grow out. I might have to move my guppies into the outdoor pond.

Anyone have any idea how long male juveniles can be together for? lets hope they are mostly female ahaha

I'd be happy to explain my set up etc. Just ask - I don't wanna write an essay right now :P

oh - I bred a Red Veil Tail Male (rhyme scheme triple point combo) with a "wild type" female mutt.

Interested to see what fish come out of it - I don't have a breeding goal at this stage.

Do keep us posted. sounds like you've really done it the right way if there are that many eggs.

So last night I noticed the fry have hatched and are still attached to their egg sacks - The male isnt doing a great job at recovering the fry that drop from the nest but I'm still hoping to get at least a dozen in the end :)

Soo, I removed the male yesterday and counted 20 fry around the tank - they weren't quite free swimming but I didn't want to leave the male in there on an empty stomach.

Today they were more active - just need to go out and get some micro worms to feed them.

Happy, happy days
