"This book will be your constant reference for setting up and maintaining a successful freshwater aquarium. You’ll come back to it again and again as you encounter (and learn to appreciate) the enormous complexities of aquatic ecosystems."

You’ll learn:

* How plants purify both water and substrate to make the aquarium healthier for fish

* What aquarium maintenance is important and what is counterproductive and/or a waste of time

* Facts about plants and algae that will come in handy for preventing those inevitable algae takeovers

* How to successfully grow plants without
expensive equipment and supplies

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Lots of very good information on howaquatic plants "work".
Cons: This book is NOT for the beginner!!

Ok, this book just blew my mind, in a bad way..

SOIL as a substrate? Bi-ANNUAL water changes? No vacuming of the substrate? No C02 injection required? Go crazy on the fish food? The more direct sunlight the better?? No need for liquid or tab ferts?

I mean, it all sounds good..

The soil already has the bacteria necessary to sustain fish from the get-go, and the other micro nutrients such as iron for the plants..

The breaking-down of the fish food and the soil provide the C02 and nutrients for the plants..

She does say that there are problems inherent in using soil, but she says they are temporary, and can be gotten around.. But she doesn't elaborate..

More questions than answers.. :(

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Goes in depth into the ecology of plants

Contrary to doug I think the book is really reasonable, I have changed my 10 gallons so there is top soil on the bottom, and added a java fern about a week ago, so far it has lost its brown spots, and is starting to become a more brilliant green

My Current Aquariums

20 gallon, Two blue gouramis, One Danios, Two albino coreys and five red guarres.
75 gallon mbuna tank, Four yellow labs, Four rusty cichlids, One red zebras, pair of Eureka peacocks
10 gallon planted- Six Caridnal tetras,
another 10 gallon, and newts
