From the Hagen/Fluval website:
"Fluval U2 Underwater Filter with three-stage filtration is ideal for use in fresh, marine or reptile environments. Stage 1 foam removes large particles. In stage 2, the poly/carbon cartridge traps fine debris, improves water clarity and removes impurities. In stage 3, BioMax provides optimal biological filtration efficiency. "
The U2 is rated for up to 30-gallon aquariums and features a venturi nozzle that can mix air with its output flow in order to provide aeration. Output can be controlled and set to three different "zones": top, middle or bottom. Top includes the venturi function and provides the most surface agitation. The middle is a lower speed output for tanks that require more gentle flow. The bottom is for tanks that require agitation further below the surface. Each zone can be controlled for flow speed. Comes with all necessary filters including BioMax ceramic media. Cartridges on both sides hold one foam and one carbon filter each. The center cage holds BioMax ceramic media.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
|
Dead silent, good quality, well-thought design, versatile
|
Cons:
|
Like all submerisbles it takes up valuable tank space
|
A very well-designed submersible filter. Loaded with featues that makes it very versatile for a wide range of applications. Can be set to one of three zones, with each zone able to be controlled for flow. Completly silent when the venturi aerator is turned off and the top nozzle is completely submerged (or if you use either of the lower nozzles). Center cage has plenty of room for ceramic.
Some negatives, aside from it taking up space in the tank... when I shut it off to do water changes, some of the debris flows out of the filter and back into the water. This is because there is no more suction holding the debris onto the foam. Also, since the water drains out of the filter when I do my water changes, I take the extra step to push the filter housing down into the remaining water. I do this because I'm afraid I will kill of too much BB from letting the filter dry out. So this causes extra steps to my water changes and the suction cups are really strong so it's not as easy as it seems to move the filter up and down on the glass.

cleans water amazingly
|
Cons:

slightly noisey

this is an amazing product it is really neat and tidy in your tank. it keeps the water really clean. I have one in my bedroom and i dont think it is noisey but maybe you do and it gives out oxygen giving a bubbling noise. i fall to sleep with the sound of the bubbling noise but again you might not like it. it keeps the tank clean and gives the water oxygen and carbon which is really good for your fish. i dont take care of tropical fish so i dont know how tropical fish like it but what i know is that my fantail and oranda love it.
