Large-capacity canister filter for fresh and saltwater aquariums
* Energy-efficient, multi-stage filtration for aquariums up to 400 gallons
* Built-in electronic circuit board monitors canister filter performance
Professional canister filter performance meets at-home convenience. Loaded with user-friendly features, the Fluval FX5 canister filter is designed for convenient installation and maintenance. Provides reliable, high-volume multistage filtration without the complicated installation associated with large wet/dry filters. The Fluval FX5 employs an advanced electronic circuit board to continually monitor pump performance for powerful, energy-efficient output. Compact design comfortably fits most aquarium cabinets. Features self-priming, instant-start system for "plug-in-and-start" convenience. Large media baskets allow custom filtration options (media sold separately). 925 gph. Measures 16" dia x 17" high. For freshwater or marine aquariums up to 400 gallons.
Includes: 9.8 ft (3 m) of 1" diameter tubing, foam filter blocks, 3 removable media baskets (1.5 gallon total media capacity), instructional DVD, and hard copy of instructions.
Notable Features:
Multidirectional Output Nozzle - Twin output nozzles can be adjusted to create specific water flows to reach all corners of the aquarium.
Self-Priming, Instant-Start System - Just add water and plug in. Fluval Smart Pump Technology will do the rest. No need for manual siphoning.
Smart Pump Technology - An electronic circuit board is employed to continually monitor the pump. Impeller speed and force are constantly measured to ensure powerful output and energy efficiency.
AquaStop Valves - Unique Click-Fit technology allows for fast set up and leak-proof maintenance. The valves rotate and are at 55-degree angles for easy positioning. They can be used to regulate water flow with no harm to the motor or its components.
Purge Valve - The valve drain allows for partial discharge of debris without needing to move the unit, open the filter lid, or disconnect hosing.
Multi-Functional Rim Connector - Innovative rim connector easily secures hosing in place. Fits most aquarium frames.
Clog-Free Strainer - Heavy-duty, anti-clogging strainer prevents build-up of solids that could impede water flow.

Although i've had some problems with my canister at first with micro bubbles and cavitation i've come to figure out none of those where the fault of the canister.
All in all it's a quit, large media and water capacity canister. It's rated up to 400gallons which is the largest i've seen from most filters around the same price.
Definitely shop around online as the local stores will gouge you.
And as for the suggested media also look into alternative as the fluval ones are also overpriced.
I gave it an 9 only because it made me mad when it wasn't working right(even though it wasn't it's fault) and changing it could be a little better. Unhooking a hose for me usually causes some water to come out even if the stoppers are closed.
You you truly want better quality filtration look at getting two smaller filters. But if you want one large capacity filter then this one is just fine.

Although a little pricey, you can find an FX5 on the web for less than what they will charge you in your lfs. This filter does what its touted to do. Water flow is phenomenal: 600+ gallons per hour with media. Unbelievably quiet! Easy connections. Easy media changes. 3 year warranty. (register with Hagen) This is the best, most efficient and hard-working filter I have ever had. And it uses only 48 watts...

Considering you can pick up one of these on e-bay for about 199.00 even the price is not a negative. I think this is one of the best filters on the market.

Huge media containers, Very Quiet, Easy setup
|
Cons:
|
Huge profile
|
This is my first canister filter. Bought it because I wanted very clean and clear water for my Mbunas. Setup, priming, adding media, and startup were super easy. It's been running for 44 days with no problems. It is very quiet compared to some other canisters I've heard.
The only drawback to this filter is it's size. It's footprint makes it hard to fit in any stand smaller than one which would hold a 125g aquarium.

Wow! Great product and definitely a value if you buy through Amazon. The flow rate is easily controllable with the flow valve and the adjustable nozzles. Very easy to set up...unless your wife is distracting you and you put the output on the input and the input on the output...then you start it...that makes things complicated. The tank is cleaner and the fish are definitely enjoying the current. The multiple trays allow you to tailor the filtration to your tank and ensure you are getting what you need. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with 55G or larger.

Great price for the amount of filtration it offers
|
Cons:

A bit large, but that also means a large area for media
|
I bought this filter a couple of years ago for a tank with a Red Eared Slider in it. Amazing flow and easy to maintain. It automatically purges air from itself once a day, which is pretty cool.
