Reverse flow via a powerhead is effective.
Cons:
sometimes ineffective, possibly detrimental.
Used in the traditional way its ineffective, and can be detrimental.
Can be used with reverse flow via a powerhead(s) in which case, much more effective.

Old technology, wouldn't buy it, but I used it in my tank for a while and seemed to work well, but the HOB is superior. You're better off investing in a HOB filter.

Best (undergravel filter plate) at not breaking attachment to lift tube
Cons:
costliest of the undergravel filter plates
I have and use several of these. They work fine (if you keep them clean) and last longer between cleanings then the others like it. Yes, reverse flow is better, but I still use mine the old way (along with other stuff)

cheap option

outdated, useless in planted tanks, messy

These filters can have they're pros but they are outweighed by its cons. It is an outdated filtration method that would cause you to completely break down your tank if you wanted to remove it.
