St Bernard

The St Bernard dog is known under many different names, including Alpenmastiff, Alpine Mastiff, Bernhardiner, Saint Dogs, and Noble Steeds. It is a very large dog; originally bred to be a rescue dog in the Alps. A full-grown male can weigh from 100 to 220 pounds (45-100 kg), and be over 35 inches (90 cm) tall. The St Bernard comes in two varieties: the short-haired (smooth-coated) St Bernard and the long-haired (fluffy-coated) St Bernard. The St Bernard was developed from herding dogs used by Swiss farmers, such as the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. Watchdogs and hunting dogs were also included. The first reports about the St Bernard dogs come from the 17th century when they were used as rescue dogs by the monks living at the hospice at the Great St. Bernard Pass in the Alps.
