Papillon Resources

The Papillon is a small toy dog with a fine bone structure. It’s ears have been described as butterfly like, and the word Papillon actually means butterfly in French. The Papillon is an old toy breed and we can trace its history through European paintings. The oldest paintings depicting Papillon like dogs have been found in Italy. The Italian painter Tiziano Vicelli depicted them in his famous Venus of Urbino in 1542 and in several other paintings as well. Papillons are popular as companion dogs, and they can also be used as watchdogs since they will alert their owners of any intruders by barking. Papillons were for instance kept as companions by the French king Louis XIV and his family. You can learn more about this charming little fellow on the pages listed below.
