Boston Terrier Resources

The Boston Terrier was originally bred to be a fighting dog and is the result of crossing White English Terriers with the French Bulldog. (The White English Terrier is now extinct.) Many different strong and sturdy dog breeds have been used to improve the Boston Terrier breed, including the English Mastiff, American Pit Bull Terrier, Bulldog, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Today, dog fights are illegal in most parts of the world and the Boston Terrier is instead kept as a devoted companion. Despite its name, the Boston Terrier is not classified as a terrier by the American Kennel Club – it has been placed in the non-sporting group. The breed does however still have a lot in common with the other terriers, including an alert and feisty attitude.
