Australian Shepherd Resources

The Australian Shepherd is an energetic working dog that needs plenty of mental and physical stimulation to thrive. An Australian Shepherd that is not provided with suitable outlets for its vast amounts of energy can grow bored and develop destructive tendencies. If you don’t have any sheep for it to herd, you can for instance let it participate in in dog sports such as Frisbee competitions and agility.
Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd breed is actually an American creation. The breed was developed by cattle owners in the Western United States during the 19th century. Since emphasis has always been placed on working abilities rather than looks, the general appearance within this dog breed varies significantly. The breed can today be divided into two main lines: working dogs and show dogs. Generally speaking, show dogs tend to have longer coats.
Before you get an Australian Shepherd, you should make sure that your lifestyle is active enough for this energetic breed. You can learn more about the Australian Shepherd and its requirements on the following resource pages or contact your local kennel club.
