  1. Default smallest upside down catfish

I used to know alot of scientific names of fish but at one local LFs they have 2 or 3 species of the syndotis cats. Before i make the drive to the lfs, they have 1 just named upside down catfish, it says 2 inchs as max leingh. Will this make a good community fish and wont eat smaller fish like rummynoses or ember tetras. it is just a small brown catfish with spots. If anyone knows the scientific name or if this would be a catfish let me know.

There are apparently 131 different Synodontis catfish.

I'd say... call the lfs from home and mention you saw them and ask for the scientific name of what type they have.

Typically the one most commonly labeled as an upside down catfish is the Synodontis nigriventris which tops out in the neighborhood of 4 inches.

One that seems to be a bit smaller than that one is the Synodontis petricola. But there are reports of them larger than 2 inches, so not sure that is the one you are looking for either.

I have not kept either, and since I dont' know what kind they had, the best I can offer is a couple of names you can google to compare.

  3. Default

Synodontis petricola, that was it, I didnt have his number, and wasnt sure the name of the store.. since it is a bit of a drive. anyway yea he said they stay aroud 1.5 to 2 inches. the owner said they may at extremes get 3 inch. I may pick one up in a week or 2
