impulse buy averted!
I saw a group of juvie firemouth at an lfs in town. Needless to say.... I salivated.... I decided it'd be best to ask the community, could I add 2 of these or any of these to my 65g with only one (adult) gold severum in it? Heavily decorated with driftwood soon to have anubias and java fern tied down everywhere.
Finally reached 6 tanks... oh god, this addiction is getting serious. 75g mbuna tank, 65g gold severum, 55g OB peacock breeding colony, 30g(36x18) growout, 20 long Dwarf Alto's, 10g fry tank.
If I die young bury me in... An 8x2x2 with versa tops and a large sump for adequate filtration;)

I'd say 2-3 would work ok with a sev

Personally I dont know but we really wanted these fish for awhile before we got our clowns in the 125.....soon as we get the clowns our one store gets tons of them. ...and they only want 2.99 each for them, but we have no room.
I thought you were downsizing ;)

Haha shhhhhh don't mention downsizing;p they are 2.99 each at my lfs as well(not mine, I actually tend to avoid this one). Looks like i'll be purchasing 2-3 new firemouth tomorrow after work:) hey scottishfish, any tips on sexing? And what type of m:f ratio should I shoot for? Also, would 1 male be better than a group of 3(with whatever ratio is best)
EDIT: I can assume some of the fish are males but I guess my main question is what really distinguishes male from female?Last edited by Northerly; 11-07-2012 at 01:25 AM.

The one time I wished I would have impulse bought was the time the LFS got in Pretty/pulcher tetras, a fish I've always wanted. I was going on vaction the next day so I did not buy them. That was 1991 and I have never seen them in a dealers tank or online since!!!

I bought 6 Juveniles (approx 0.7d5-1inch) unable to sex them, and I think I've ended up with 2male-4female.
Whenyou raise them together males stick out real easy, pointed dorsal fin, way more blue specs in fins and scales, and their throats are redder. Look at my photo journal, just added 4 pics of my main male.

I have two female firemouths in my 90 gallon with my severum. It has been working well for me. Cichlids behavior can be hard to predict at times tho. If you get a breeding pair of firemouths you will have a higher chance of some aggression.
As long as you have good filtration, it might be worth a try to add two firemouths.If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

My filtration/waterchange schedule on this tank is above average I would say, melbourne(the sev) is my boy hahaha:p I think i'll be getting 2:) i guess i'll shoot for a male and a female but would 2 males be better? Or just cause the aggression problems more quickly?
