I liked the firemouths I had too. The problem I had was the odd man out took a real beating and was not even allowed to come to the bottom of the tank to find himself a cave. (Actually I wasn't even sure if it was male or female because it was so stressed out and colorless.)
My next problem was culling 400 babies that I could not find homes for. That was most unpleasant. I even put a bunch of babies in with my blood parrots thinking the parrots would eat them but the darned parrots adapted them and took care of them. *sigh
I almost think these fish should be overstocked or just in a pair. Hopefully our severum will make short work out of your abundance of babies you might have? They are funny to watch and their constant trying to dominate others but never get into a real scrimmage. But really, it's the the same as in most cichlids? You try to get a pair only to end up with babies you don't know what to do with.Last edited by Lady Hobbs; 11-16-2012 at 12:46 PM.

Easy to tell males from females as they mature just by color.

Yea they are quite the little characters:) so far so good, they definitely do have a lot of little tussles lol. Beautiful fish that were well worth the 2.99 each, I would have paid like 12 dollars lol.

We had a member here from Germany a couple of years ago that had a 300 gallon, fully planted, and she had dozens of them in her tank. She had so many that she really didn't have any problems at all.
