I don't see a need to return the fish, especially since there was nothing wrong with them from the store.

And I agree that a 10% change is pretty much a waste of time.

If a store refused to take then, I would not blame them.

A&W Fish: the reason it has been suggested to return the fish is for the sake of the fish. No need to put them through a difficult cycle if they can be returned. It's so much better to cycle fishless - trust me. I've done it both ways. My first tank, I cycled with fish because I didn't know what I was doing. It was horribly stressful for them and me :o( That's not saying it can't be done ... it's just more labor intensive and used much more water for the frequent w/c's. Fishless is painless for everyone. Then, when the tank is cycled, you can add the fish with no worries that they will die of ammonia and or nitrite poisoning during the cycling process.
And yes, it's possible the fish store won't refund the money. But again, it's about what's best for the fish.
