Hmmm...haven't heard of yellow barbs - however, I will tell you that while fish generally school with their own species, there are exceptions - I've seen people post that a single fish will school with a larger group of fish different than themselves.

Cherry barbs are Puntius titteya. Only kind of cherry barb there is. The females are more yellow/brownish than the males but that's the only yellow barb in that group.

They mix well but don't school per say and the Cherry barbs won't school as tight as the Golden.

I've kept both of these fish but not together so I'm not sure if they would school together. Cherry barbs are not tight schoolers at all, and it's been years since I've had golden barbs (I knew them as Schubert's barbs if this is the same type - man made creation I think) but I think they stuck together a little more.

if you have the tank space for it why not just get a school for each fish. if they school together they will be great if not then they will still be fine

I would pass on them if you intend to put them in a 20 gallon tank and stick with a larger school of the cherry barbs........more females than males. I don't think 20 gallons is a good tank for the larger barbs, myself.
