Hi I have a couple of questions, I want to add a few Harlequins and talked a few days ago on here about it. My question is the last new fish I added was about 2 1/2 wks ago and everyone is healthy and no problems what are my chances of bring something like ick or whatever into my tank if I do buy a few new fish and how long before I would know all is well?
The second question is can fish reproduce in a tank without live plants? Thanks for any help or advice in advance

Live plants are not required for spawning.

It's hard to answer the other question:

With no mention of use of a QT tank ... IMO the odds are roughly 100% that eventually you will import some Ich into your tank. [Or worse. Not being alarmist, Just stating the odds] How long before that happens is anybody guess.

QT is highly recommended and for a very good reason. I don't want to risk giving my stock whatever the sickest fish in the store tank had so. . . No fish hits my tanks without several weeks of QT.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

    +1 to 850R

Take it from someone who had to learn that lesson the hard way many years ago, if you do not QT your fish it will only be a matter of time before something gets introduced into your tank.

I QT all new additions for 3 to 4 weeks of problem free observation.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I use to have a QT a few years ago I just no longer have one.... I'm really tempted to not add any new fish it's just that my 2 harlequins are still not having anything to do with the little odd man out ... wow I sure don't want to loose the ones I have they are doing so good.. Is there anything else besides a QT that would up the chances of a good add?

Is it just the lack of a spare tank that would prevent you from quarantining new fish ?

If you don't have a tank to use, you can always improvise

I've used rubber maid totes before as a QT tank when I did not have a extra tank to spare. You just have to be careful not to fill them up all the way to the top and make sure the heater will not touch the the rubber maid tote or it could melt a hole in it

    Just a suggestion

    IMO, Nothing even comes close.

A QT tank is effectively a buffer between the stores environment and your tank.

Bypassing this eliminates the opportunity to observe your fish adjusting to your conditions as well as the benefits of insuring that the new arrivals are healthy and showing no signs of anything untoward either visibly/external or behaviour-wise.

Skipping this step imports anything nasty they brought with them directly into your tank and risks all your fish.

That's my take on it but it's your tank and your call.

EDIT: & As Cliff mentioned above, Think outside the glass box.

Thank you everyone!! I have decided to take your advice and thinking outside the box either somehow come up with a QT or not add anything until I do. As you have said just not worth the risk.

Agree with those who said to QT. I currently have 7 neons in QT that had ich. No visable signs at purchase. Then, bang, a problem. I'm so glad I was able to treat in the QT and the fish in my DT were spared the exposure.

For the fish you're keeping, a 10gwould make an excellent QT.
