These are all great suggestions. Thanks!

Some of the stocking combinations I'm now considering (not in any particular order):

betta sorority (7) -- might be hard to find a nice variety around here as fewer females are offered for sale
    dwarf chain loaches (6)

    dwarf gourami (1)
    rummynose tetras (9)
    bristlenose pleco (1)

    dwarf gourami (1)
    zebra loach (5)

    still thinking...

I'm no expert but I believe that if you do a betta sorority you don't keep other fish in the tank, just the female bettas. Although a BN pleco instead of the loaches might be okay.

And also if by Zebra Loach you're refering to Botiia striata, they get too big for a 25g IMO. Not enough room for how active they are. I'd stick to Dwarf Chains.

Good info about the zebra loach size -- I was wondering about that.

I've done tons of reading about betta sororities and they can do well with other fish; cories in particular are often housed with them. I'll do more checking about them with loaches before deciding anything for sure.

A question about another fish -- would a small school of neon /peacock (Melanotaenia praecox) rainbows be okay in this tank size?
