  1. Default South American Community (almost)

I am thinking of setting up a 20 Gal Tank with the following:

    1 Bolivian RAM (Microgeophagus altispinosa)
    5/6 Cardinal Tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi)
    4 Panda Corydoras
    3/4 Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata)

    Fishless cycled, planted.

Is that too many? too little? Any issues?

Looks good you could even expand the Cardinals to 10-12 and not be overcrowded. Also expand your pandas to six they are smaller than most cories and will be happier.

  3. Default

I would up the tetras as mentioned, and maybe even add a second Bolivian Ram. A 20 long is sufficient space for a Bolivian pair.

Talking My answer may change though ;-P

Without any mention of filtration I have to say that is far too much... BTW - What is your filtration going to be?

Joe, There was no mention of a 20 long that I saw...

I have not bought anything yet I'm planning it first. I could go for a 20 Long if that would be good for 2 RAMs

The filter I haven't looked at yet in detail, any suggestions? Something quiet would be nice.

Also should I add an air stone or something similar?

Glad 850R asked the question. I would get an Aquaclear 70 at least and no you won't need an airstone at least in my opinion.

    Thumbs up

Ah I like that you are planning ahead, Wasn't sure if you had the tank or not already.

A 20 Long is a better footprint IMO Are you intending on planting it? Your stock would like that :-D.

I am a fan of Aquaclear filters [50 min or 70 in this case] for HOB and EHEIMs for Canister filters [The ECCO series is good for smaller tanks] - Get one that is rated for at least 2 times the size of your tank, I am sure other suggestions will arrive shortly.

Yes I am planting it. Would a Long tank have issues with the plants since they have less vertical room?

Do the plants just stop growing when they get to the surface?

The size of the plants depends on the kind of plant. If you meet the lighting requirements it will keep growing. I have some plqnts that grow out of the tank, i.e. water sprite. Some plants grow tall and start filling up the tank vertically and horzontal. i.e vals.

It's give and take & you have to plant accordingly. Some plants will grow out of anything lol.

With a 20L though you have a larger footprint to plant and more options for 'scaping in general imo.
