Oops, This just made it to the top of new posts for me :-P.

I never kept black skirts but I do have Roselines [12 growing out in my community 90] & IME they are not aggressive at all so I don't see them standing up to any aggression from the rainbow

I agree that tigers would be a better choice IMO, I have a species tank of TB [29] but due to it's size I have never considered a mid-sized shark as a mate.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

I actually have a tank with Tiger Barbs and a Rainbow Shark, and I love the combination.

The Tiger Barbs pester the hell out of most fish in the tank. Especially any new fish, they tend to be overly curious and nip them a lot.

When i first introduced the Rainbow Shark into the tank, the tiger barbs harassed it mercilessly. But it only took 48 hour for the shark to find all the good hiding spots and learn about feeding time and he turned the tables on the tiger barbs. The barbs are fast enough and tough enough, that they get away and go to higher water, but they dont back down so its a good balance of chase and be chased with those guys. Tiger barbs are a bunch of bullies and the RS reminds them of their place :)

On a side note I have an albino cory cat and some neon tetras and the shark ignores them. I also have a 55 gal semi planted tank.

Not true! I had 2 rainbows and a red tail together and they all got along fine!!!!! (my dino bichir ate it after he lost his eye) It all depends on the fish :) I would get one until they have expressed their personality then look at getting another if you really like them!

Were these full sized mature fish? What size tank was it? You left out some significant details.

    Very good questions.

Thank you all for your suggestions . I really think I will go with the barbs . How many would be good in a 55 long , semi planted with lots of rock work for caves and a small amount of driftwood ? The rainbow is now almost 5 inches long and always foraging . Thank you all so much !!!!
ask ?'s and change some water pair of JD's and loving it.

55 is plenty big....you only have the rainbow shark right now?

If you wanted to do all barbs, you could go with a big school of 20-24 regular tiger barbs (TB).

Of you could mix and match, 8 regular TB, 8 green TB, and 8 albino TB.

It might also be a good tank for angelfish, but I would not recommend those with the TB.

You could also mix some different barb species. 12 TB and 12 cherry barbs
    12 TB/8 Odessa Barbs/1 Small Pleco

12 TB and 16-20 Neon Tetras (they come in cardinal, black, glo light, green, and white cloud varieties)

I would not keep little neons with a shark in the tank. Neons also stick out near the bottom in shark territory.

You can have a mix of Albino, Rosie or Tiger Barbs to mix it up some. NOT cherry Barbs!
