If you do go with a bristle nose pleco have some/ one nice pease of wood for him.( I just love them, damn good workers )
I used the fluval 205 on my 110L tank and it did a good job. Didn`t have strong flow, so was good for a planted tank.
just a reminder,,,don`t remover your old filter entil the new is ready, run both for a few weeks.

WRT the canister - I have a magnum 350 Pro on my main tank and a Fluval 206 on my conditioning tank. The magnum is a pain in the butt to work with relative to the Fluval. I hate how hard it is to disconnect the lines and re-align the lid. I also don't like the media chamber. There is only one, and its cumbersome to work with. I actually dislike it so much I'm going to retire it in favor of a Fluval 406.
Agree with the others re canister size. One rated for 2x your aquarium is good. I always run two filters, which combined are rated for 3x my aquarium size.
Sunlight is like steroids for algae.

If you are having algae issues, most often this is due to imbalance issues - light or nutrients with the later the more common. Check you nitrate and phosphate levels. Be sure your lights have enough intensity and are the correct color temperature. A biological filter will not do anything relative to these issues.

A 75 gal with eight Discus, fake plants, and a lot of wood also with sand substrate. Clean up crew is fifteen Sterba's Corys. Filters: canister w/UV, in-tank algae scrubber that removes phosphates and nitrates! Also, a highly dangerous commercial nitrate removal unit from hell
