I would suggest about 8 hours a day
The exact on and off times would depend on what you want to view the tank with the lights onIf you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I have mine on a timer. 8hrs a day and set to be on while I'm home after work rather than during the day.
