Goldfish, red gill -- normal or not?

We have two goldfish who are in a 10 gallon tank. the one who is orange and white in the attached video seems to have red gills. Does anybody know if what we're looking at is normal or is this something that we should be concerned about?



We have the water on a filter regular cycle through ammo trips and carbon bits. I plan to refresh the water once a week about 20%.

The gold and orange fish does seem to exhibit some aggressive behavior towards the other. I know that that may be causing some stress and I'm concerned about the orange and white one.

Thoughts welcome.

Red gillis can sometimes be a syptom of ammonia poisoning. Have you tested your ammonia yet ? Has the tank been cycled ?

Also, i really don't know of any gold fish that can live out its life in a 10 gallon. You might want to consider up-grading to a much larger tank or finding new home(s) for these gold fish

Unfortunately, your tank is too small for a couple reasons.

One, goldfish kept in those tanks keep growing on the inside and get stunted on the outside, leading to serious health problems.

Two, they produce a LOT of waste, and with two in that tank, they are likely suffering from ammonia poisoning since the filter can't keep up.

Also, those ammo-chips eventually "fill up" and stop working...it's better to get a natural cycle going. Read the stickies on how, and please find a bigger tank.

Red gills are certainly a sign of ammonia poisoning.

Read the goldfish size chart in my signature. Not even one goldfish can be in a 10 gallon of any kind. Gasping with red gills is due to the tank not being cycled. Do 50% water change a couple times a week at the least.

+1 with all of the above - the answers to red gills is to change your water by more than 20% and more than once a week and to either rehome the goldfish or get a larger tank
