    Default brown spots

    Hey guys,

    Just a quick one,

    Noticing that on the glass of my tank and on the ornaments and leaves in the tank there are brown spots that are easily wiped off glass and washed off the ornaments.

    Just wondering what they are and how can i prevent them?

    Do they have anything to do with lighting?

    Sounds like diatoms

    Is your tank fairly new ?
    If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

    Wipe them off and in a short period of time, they'll be gone, never to return. As Cliff said - diatoms or a silicon eating algae that uses new substrate to feed from (from the water.)
    Knowledge is fun(damental)

    A 75 gal with eight Discus, fake plants, and a lot of wood also with sand substrate. Clean up crew is fifteen Sterba's Corys. Filters: canister w/UV, in-tank algae scrubber that removes phosphates and nitrates! Also, a highly dangerous commercial nitrate removal unit from hell

    It is a new tank,

    so you reccomend simply cleaning it all off and it should, over time go away?

    I had diatoms in my tank for a few months - just kept cleaning them off and then they never came back - they dont' look nice but they're harmless : )
    46 gal fw tank with black skirt tetras, neon tetras, spotted cory catfish, cherry barbs, guppies, snails & 4 amano shrimp - plastic & live plants
    5 gal QT with green corys & 2 guppies
