A better first meeting than I heard Casper and Chester had. As I heard it, Casper was on top of the chest freezer glaring daggers at Chester, and then taking swipes at him at every available opportunity. Four pounds of diabetic cat chasing 70 pounds of dog up and down the hallway. She never liked this big hairy intruder, and even after she died Chester was paranoid of every shadow, crevice, and white plastic bag for over a year.

He didnt eat at all yesterday. Or this morning. Cat happily ate his food for him. Cesars was a yummy new food Sandy said. I tried to give him water when i stopped at McDonald's on way back from pet store today, and he threw it up. Im guessing thats because it was pretty cold water, he drank it fast, and he was hot in the car. He didnt throw up when he drank the warmer water when we got back home though. And he ate a little bit of food too, and a treat. So at least hes getting some kind of food. His old owner said its fine that hes not eating, he will eat eventually, he probably just has to settle in completely first.

Last night i found out the one thing i did not want to deal with. He barks non-stop when he is out in the backyard. Loud shrill little dog barks. I dont want him annoying the neighbors, so i had to fix it. I went to my pet store That Fish Place That Pet Place to get him this collar today:

I must say im surprised at how well it works. The sound function is pointless, its just a little beep. But the vibrate function, now thats nice. It doesnt shock, just vibrates for a second every time he barks. He completely freaks out when it vibrates, but it makes him be quiet. Already i think he is starting to get the concept. We praise him when hes quiet and i keep calming him down after a freak out. I put him in the yard and he barked only like 6 or 7 times in 10 minutes. Thats a great improvement to this morning when i let him out and he barked non-stop.

Suddenly hes hungry! Devoured a tray thing of food like he hadnt eaten in a week. For some reason he was showing no interest at all in his dishes that he came with, and barely even drank. We bought him a fancy dish set with a pretty stand, and another pretty blue dish for his wet food. He likes them. Drinking more now, and ate his wet food. She said he doesnt eat much dry food, but im trying to make him eat that more so his teeth stay nice, so he is cutting down to one tray a day of the Cesar's, and free feeding of dry food, but only 1 1/2 cups a day total. Thats a bit more than suggested, but the cat eats it too, so its fair then.

I know with cats feeding dry food actually harms the teeth. I'm prety sure its the same with dogs.

However I'm currently on a budget so I must feed dry taste of the wild but i know its not good for them.
Oh well better then meow mix or friskies. When I get into a new work program I'll have more money and i'll feed better quality canned food.

My vet says dry food helps clean the teeth so they dont get rotten, in both cats and dogs. The thing it hurts on cats is the urinary tract in males.

I'm glad he's settling in! It will take a while for him to get into the swing of a new routine.

Good thing you're right up on the barking, before he develops that habit in his new home...

    Food and teeth...the debate continues.

However, in most instances hard food = healthier teeth.

My Mini-D however, has a real tartar problem and she's always had hard it's no guarantee. Even the vets are a bit perplexed with her.

Our cats get both hard food and a bit of soft...they have decent teeth as well. You do need to keep an eye on things and get any necessary treatment on the early side...don't let it slide.

Today Paddy was back to not eating. We noticed that the food was pate and not filet like the first two cans. I guess he really doesnt like pate. Cant say i blame him, it does look so nasty. Ill buy more filet food tonight. Til then he can get used to eating more of his dry food or go hungry.

He hasnt barked really at all out back with his new collar. He seems to have figured out how to get around it, by barking really quiet or growling. I dont mind that, that wont bother neighbors because its quiet. :) There are still a few times he has started to bark and stopped. I think he is learning remarkably fast. So happy i didnt have to go to shock collar. I think that is so inhumane.

Im trying to work on his dog aggression now. We walked past several misbehaved dogs in backyards that were barking at us, and some were even jumping and trying to get out of their yards. Paddy was growling and charging towards them, but i kept giving the leash a little abrupt tug and saying "Paddy no, come!" to make him stop. By the last house we walked past he only had a little few seconds of freezing and looking. Maybe in a few weeks i will be able to start actually getting to dogs on leashes and making him interact with them, and hopefully by christmas i can take him to my aunts house without him attacking her Goldens.

... All these problems i have to work on. The dog aggression is a big thing! How did the old owner forget to mention that? Its a good thing i am a firm pack leader and good trainer, or i would have been in a horrible spot with such a problematic pooch.

At least you're taking control right from the start...that's the best way to institute changes in behaviour...
