Thread: Getting Nervous... New Tank

dccstl.....You said the fish store recommended the goldfish, not that you went there to get them because you wanted them. Fish stores will often recommend goldfish simply for cycling purposes.
Yes, you can cycle with them but will have to keep up with testing daily, water changes and adding a bac booster may help the fish along. It will take longer to cycle the tank, however, because it's an unheated tank. So, what may take a month in a heated tank, may end up taking twice as long in an unheated tank.Cycling With Fish?•• The Fishless Cycle••

This cycling is a mess....
Here is the latest. None of this is going as planned:
I had to use the ammolock as an emergency. I don't know if it worked or not, but a day later the tank smelled like rotten eggs, was thick and almost slimy and was so milky you couldn't see through it.
My goldfish almost died, I was able to rescue them. They are doing well and it has been about 1 1/2 weeks. The tank they are temporarily in is far too small so I am hoping I will be able to move them out soon.
The tank still looks the same although the eggs smell is no longer there. The guy at the fish store keeps telling me to wait it out, however it has been almost a month since we started this. I am not an expert but something is most definitely not right. I quit adding ammolock (although they kept telling me too) because I don't see how that is allowing this fish tank to cycle. Please see results below
