The bypass is just there so that with the container get's full of water it goes into the tank. not on your floor.
Do you have it stuffed full of biomax/filters?

Take all the media out and see how it's supposed to work. Put back one form of media at a time and see how it actually works, until you find which one is clogging the path.

some bypass is to be expected. When it's happening a lot, it's usually a sign that your sponge has gotten too crudded up and it's time for a rinse.
300 gallon mega tank: build in progress
75 gallon community tank: tetras, danios, corys, platies, otos, pearl gouramis, bristlenose pleco, assassin snails, red cherry shrimp, bamboo shrimp
70 gallon growout tank: clown loaches, sailfin pleco
60 gallon goldfish tank: fancy goldfish
29 gallon frog tank / 10 gallon tadpole tank: 1 leopard frog, 1 tadpole
10 gallon and 5.5 gallon betta tanks: 1 male betta each, sometimes snails

+1 to the above, my sponges get reaallllyyy dirty very quickly in my mbuna tank because the bioload is so large.

If I die young bury me in... An 8x2x2 with versa tops and a large sump for adequate filtration;)
