I would disagree with that statement. All that is really necessary is surface agitation to complete the gas exchange process. Air bubbles are beneficial when your filtration doesn't offer adequate surface agitation.

Finally reached 6 tanks... oh god, this addiction is getting serious. 75g mbuna tank, 65g gold severum, 55g OB peacock breeding colony, 30g(36x18) growout, 20 long Dwarf Alto's, 10g fry tank.
If I die young bury me in... An 8x2x2 with versa tops and a large sump for adequate filtration;)

This is the sponge filter I use in all of my 10g breeder tanks.

I would definitely recommend those filters. For the price, it is probably the best filter you can buy online. I challenge you to find a better deal on one.
Personally I have never had one fail on me, and I own 15 of them. Been using them for 3 years now, clean them once a month and only lightly.
It's double sponged, so it's twice as efficient in housing bacteria as other single sponge filters. It also hooks up to your air pump, which is exactly what you wanted. It also comes with suction cups to stick to the wall of your tank.
My only advice to you is if you don't want your water to be too disturbed, you can turn the bubble head upwards.
