Here is another suggestion for a tetra that has a good reputation as being hardy and peaceful. Their shape would keep them from being a target for the you Wonder killies. The Rosy tetra; Hyphessobrycon rosaceus.

The only problem is their are so many fish that look similer but act the same except one. You have the Ornate, Roberts, HY511 and the Copeland that acts like a Serpae. Of course these have even more common names but I know your a great researcher if your interested.

    Just one more suggestion.

Steeler, you never cease to amaze me with how much you know about fish and the different kinds out there. These are just as beautiful. I'll have to weigh my options and research each a bit to see which would be a better fit.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. =]

The Rosy tetra; Hyphessobrycon rosaceus....steeler seriously how do you keep coming up with these fabulous fish?! Kevin if you can find these they would look just lovely in your tank, even better the wonder twins would not be able to swallow or attempt to swallow them ;).

Personally, I am down to 3 female Black Phantoms, all my males succumbed to the same (still not absolutely sure what) disease...all other fish, just fine and dandy. I truly miss seeing my "big black" with the moon lights on patrolling the middle of the tank in all his splendor.

I was thinking of trying some bloodfins but if I could find these.....

Kevin and I had this discussion about Black phantoms awile back. Back in the 80's when they were still a new fish I always had great luck with them. Most of them are now tank raised so I along with Kevin believe that they are the product of poor stock in most cases. The ones I've bought the last few years do fine than start wasting away after a few months. I keep their cousins the Red phantoms; most of them are still wild cought and they are still going great after two years and they are supposed to be more sensative to water conditions than the Blacks.

Bloodfins are a very underated fish IMO. Peaceful, tough and pretty all rolled into one, plus they are one of the best schoolers you can find,

You can get Rosy from the same site I had you check out before. They have the Hyphessobrycon Bentosi that almost the same fish.

I have just one thing to add....columbia tetra...they are a fairly recent addition, hardy, healthy and very active. Very beautiful tetra to begin with and I don't believe they have been subject to over breeding or other mistreatment because they are beautiful to begin with. Steeler1, please correct me if I am wrong with these assumptions.

    Hyphessobrycon columbianus

Kevin, you've got a beautifully planted tank there and I sincerely hope you can find some healthy fish to keep in it.
When in doubt, do a water change.

Right on Taurus , they are such a new addition like you said; that none of the Baensch Aquarium atlas's have them listed.

Wow, I really like the Columbian Tetras and Bloodfins, too... Too many to choose from. I'm willing to bet I won't be able to find all of them for sale, so that should narrow it down for me. However, this is a great list to start from.

    Black Ruby Barbs
    Rosy Tetras
    Columbian Tetras
    Bloodfin Tetras
    Congo Tetras
    Buenos Aires Tetras

All such beautiful fish... Some are bigger than others. I'd like to be able to keep to the 2.5-3" size, so I can get a nice big school in there, so that would probably rule out a couple species.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the insight and assistance. =]

Oh, on a side-note... My Penn Plax Cascade 1000 finally bit the bullet. I noticed a lot of bubbling going on recently (where there would be air intake, along with the water), and lately it's become more frequent w/ longer periods of bubbling. I tried tipping the filter back and forth, but if I tilted it to one side, the bubbling got worse... tilted to the other side made the impeller stop churning. So, I did some digging (as in, taking the filter apart). Looks like where the upper casing that holds the motor to the lower casing was actually coming apart on one of the sides, allowing air, water (and to my surprise, small snails) into the motor area. The compartment was flooded with water and it was impossible to seal back up (on that side). Every other side was seamless.

Anyway, I had to replace it with the Filstar XP M that I had laying around, and while it's only rated for 75gal, it's already working 100% better than the other piece of crap. That's my first and last Penn Plax filter. Even my off-brand and much less expensive Grech was more silent and better performing.

That being said, today is water-change day... AND my whole home filter is fully functional now that I installed the fluoride filter. So, from now on - clean, pollutant-free water for everyone, including the fish. ;P Hope it makes them more comfortable.

Just a side note, unrelated to fish... my wife and I are having a baby on Friday (it's a scheduled induction). We're going to the doctor tomorrow for her last exam and my wife's going to the hospital for preparation. Please wish us luck! If I'm absent for a while, you know why. =]
