Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your kind words and thoughtful responses.

To answer some of your questions:

    - I started dosing metricide in all of my tanks over a year ago. I have no reason to believe that that is the cause of the issues I'm having. Keep in mind that my 40 hasn't had any loss of fish life yet, aside from the recent additions of hatchets, who brought in ich and were also thought to be food for the angels. If metricide was the issue, I would have suffered losses long ago.

    - I started injecting co2 in the 75 about a month ago. Aside from the deaths of nerite snails, because they kept getting sucked into the pump, I didn't have any real problems. I can't recall when I was hit with ich in the 75, but I'm convinced the GBRs brought it in. I think it was a coincidence that the ich broke out soon after switching to co2, because I determined that the ph didn't drop/crash. I had a bad test kit. Tried another one and ph was at normal levels.

    - I noticed that trouble really started with the ich meds. The clams weren't dying prior to dosing meds. At the end of treatment they just started dropping like flies. Same with the Raphael catfish. No problems until treatment was over.

    - I do think that nitrates can cause stress, but even at the levels in my tanks, they shouldn't have been deadly. If they were, I'd expect much less hardy and smaller fish to die off, like my micro fish or rummies. Raph cats are said to be one of the hardiest and easiest fish to keep. They can be kept in a tank with a monthly water change of about 25%, so these nitrate levels should have been more than acceptable. I'll also mention that I've had nitrate spikes I this rank before, when we had Noah. The cats were fine.

I used to dose the EI method using seachem flourish liquid brands about 1.5yrs ago and things were relatively fine. I've just recently started again, but I'm using dry ferts now. I can't recall my nitrate tests then, but my cats survived that, as well.

All of that being said, I did order the seachem test to see how that compares to the API test. That article did give me something more to think about, though. How accurate are these tests, really, and how much weight should we place on them?

I really think it was the medication that did them in.

Just a quick question, did you half the dose of Quik cure like they suggested for sensative fish and invertebrates?

I used ich attack in the 75 and quick cure in the 40. The ich attack came without warnings, suggesting it be natural and safe for all fish and inverts. Oddly, the rabbit snails are all doing fine. The only warning on the quick cure, if I remember, was for tetras and saltwater fish.

Also odd, is that all of my catfish (all 16 of them) in the 40 were fine after treatment, but the clams have been dying one by one.

To answer your question: I used a full dose in both cases.

I have not used Ich attack before, but keeping allmost all tetra's I always go half on quick cure, seems it did not harm anybody in the 40 so all good.

I've used Ich Attack in my tank before and it did no harm to the fish. Can't say anything about inverts though as I don't keep them at this time.
When in doubt, do a water change.

Dan, the rabbit snails are pretty cool characters. They're mostly nocturnal, though, so don't worry if you don't see much of them at first.

They'll eat pretty much anything, including plants. However, if you keep them well fed, they won't touch the plants.

Bronze cories Kev. Didn't bother them a bit. Different kind of catfish I know.
