    lol, that's true.

    So, I came home to find some non-so surprising, yet somber news. Mr. Betta has finally passed. He was certainly a pleasure to have. He was a very curious and aware little fellow. I hope he enjoyed the remainder of his days from a cup to a 10gal and then a 20gal long. He shall be missed.

    Anyway, enough of that...

    I tested my water params and came up with the following:
    20gal = 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10-20ppm nitrates
    40gal = 0, 0, 10ppm
    75gal = 0, 0, 10-20ppm

    The 20gal was really too close to tell, between 10-20ppm. Really wish I had a better card to go by. The 75gal was trending a bit closer to 20ppm, I think. That makes sense, due to the much increased bioload. I was going to wait to swap out the SunSun 302 with the Filstar XP L, but I might as well do it this weekend. Should bring the trates down a bit. The last water change on the 75 was on Sunday and I don't think I tested them right after, like I did the 20 & 40. Nope, I checked... and I didn't. So, not sure what they were after the water change, but it looks like they're still sitting at a pretty good level, since the last time, before the water change, they were at 20-30ppm (that was tested on Sunday, though, so I'm 3 days out).

    Anyway, as far as the sponge-free test goes, I suppose things are going well. I can't complain, as 10-20ppm is the sweet spot for most freshwater tanks, but I really wanted to bring that down to at least 5ppm.

    Also, in spite of the betta bad news, I can start to plan my new 20gal stocking. =] I'll restock once I've rescaped, though (or finished scaping, that is).

    Sorry to hear about Mr. Betta, Kev. I know how it is to get attached to a fish after only a few months, much less how long you had him. I don't know how I'll react after losing one of my "long timers", but I know it won't be pleasant. I'm sure Mr. Betta had the best care he could ask for, and if possible, he was grateful for it and for you.

    RIP Mr. Betta

    As far as trates go, you may never reach that 5 goal, but their levels are nonetheless in the "sweet spot" range that we can all live with. As far as trying to tell between a reading of 10 and 20, it's really hard for me, too. I swear it looks like 15 every time...it sure in the heck isn't the red of the 20, but it's not the orange of the 10 either, it's somewhere in between. I've had Angie and Lauren confirm this.

    I, too am sorry about your betta. How old was he? Did we ever see a photo of him?
    In any event, I know you gave him a good life.

    Thanks guys. =]

    Matt, if I go by that online test strip, my trates would be consistently 10-15ppm. I never have red readings, just different shades of orange. Speaking of which, I never did hear back from ATI about their test cards and the comparison to the onlines. Hrmmm

    I'm not sure how old he was, but I purchased him from Petsmart in the Summer of 2012.

    Here's an older photo of Mr. Betta in the 10gal:
