  1. Default boiled eggs as fish food

Googling one can quickly find a couple of dozen places that says one can use hard boiled eggs as food for fry and drops etc.

Hardly anyone describes how to prepare and use the eggs.

One place says shake a bit of boiled egg yoke in water, strain and put a few drops in the breeding tank. Sounds easy enough, is that it?

that would probably work. What I did was put a tiny bit of egg yolk in a small container, mash it up good, add a little tank water to the container, mix, and then add that to the fry take. It worked all right... I was never entirely pleased with the results.

To be honest I was much, much happier using commercial fry food (Hikari First Bites is what I used, but there are others). I know it costs a bit more than an egg but it was much easier to use and I feel like the fry did better on it.

Discus breeders use a bakers powdered egg yolk that is suspension flash dried to feed their fry. This stuff works for that application, hard to find it though.

Most times using a yolk you want to hard boil the egg for a lot longer to fracture the fats so they will be smaller in particle size. So you boil the egg hard with the water rolling for about 10 plus minutes. You fracture the yolk in half, take a small section of it separate from the rest and rub a well wet finger on it and intro that to the tank.

Egg yolk fouls water fairly quickly though, for that reason I use two products that I like better. I use Phyto plan a phyto plankton flash dried product by Two Little fishes and Juliann Sprung or I will use Sera Micron. I have used these on M. Parva , M Kamake, G. Wannamensis, M Bosemani, M Tri fasciata, and many other very tiny fry with good results. I have used this on many small tetra and danio species as well. It does not foul the water and has excellent suspension characteristics. I have gotten batches of 300 bosemani to BBS new hatch acceptance using either of these products, I could not achieve that using egg yolk. I even tried more concentrated yolks such as quail.

Egg yolk power is easy to get. ...In 50# boxes. ;-)

Here are some sites that sell in smaller quantities, such as a pound.

The idea of filtered egg yolk was protein. Hard boiled egg yolk was put into a linen cloth (handkerchife) where the cloth is twisted to squeeze very small particles of yolk through the cloth.
It spoils in two days even in the fridge.

Hikari First Bites, De-encapsulated brine shrimp eggs, and the fine grades of Golden Pearls and Cyclop-Eeze are simpler and a LOT easier to have on hand.

I have used this exact same method to feed Bolivian Ram fry, but like you, I found the other kinds of food much better. And also the egg did make the water a bit yuck. I found I was having to do more water changes.

I fed my fry wee pieces of hard boiled egg yolk until they were big enough to take brine shrimp. There is no preparing. It's hard boiling an egg and smashing up the yolk. Makes the water messy so only feed like a wee bit.
