Took a little trip today. Lowes, Meijer (Michigan-area superstore), Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Petco, LFS.

All the home improvement / hardware stores have pretty much the same thing - nothing smaller than pea gravel. Also would have cost about $10 for all the substrate I need... but it's just not what I want.

Petco had some great looking stuff, in 5-pound bags for 5 dollars.

My LFS had similarly good stuff. It's this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Spectrastone-S.../dp/B0001RTHRY

also for $5 for 5 pound bags. I talked to the employee and told them how I liked the look of it but was balking at shelling out $250 for substrate. They offered to special order the same thing in 25-pound bags and sell it to me for $15 if I bought 10 bags. So that's $150... still more than I was hoping to pay but I do think it's the best option. I'll have it in about a week. But first, I've got to let the spray paint on the undergravel jets cure, then do more spray paint, then let that cure. Then, once I have the substrate, I can silicone it to the jets and go from there.

While all that's going on, I can put the tank on the stand and work on the sump to stand plumbing. I don't technically need the undergravel jets for the rest of the plumbing to work. I've got a bit of painting to finish first, and a chest injury that's preventing me from lifting anything have that's got to heal up too. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel here though.
300 gallon mega tank: sailfin pleco, clown loaches, silver dollars, roseline sharks, congo tetras
75 gallon community tank: black skirt tetras, danios, bronze corys, harlequin rasboras, otos, bristlenose and bulldog plecos, assassin snails, red cherry shrimp, bamboo shrimp
60 gallon goldfish tank: fancy goldfish

that gravel looks very big and I just want to give you a heads up it will trap alot of debris underneath. pool filter sand should be dirt cheap this time of year just sayin'....

I have that gravel in my tank and it looks really nice. I mixed it with pea gravel so I have more variation in stone size. I think if I did it again I'd just go with the size you have there.

@Crispy, that stuff is at most 5mm thick and if I recall he didn't want to use sand due to bad experiences in the past and it wouldn't be very compatible with his jet system.
Increasing your biodiversity increases your stability.

You know what this tank needs? ........................ Crypts.

yeah, you can't tell from the photograph, but it's the smallest grained gravel I've seen in person. I'll post some pics next to some reference objects once I get in hand.

Great to see so much progress on your mega tank.

Ours is hopefully slated for next year. Had the first contractors in today for estimates to fix up the basement room it is going in, including new circuits for the tank and for heat to the room.

Did you ever finalize a stocking list for this bad boy?

That's the substrate I have in my 26G. It's very nice. Everyone seems to really like it in my aquarium. The only thing I try to do is stir up to make sure that any algae that tries to grow, goes away, and the rocks stay a brighter color.

I know Meijer. =] Most of my family lives up in Kalamazoo, so I'm pretty familiar with that store.

Good choice on substrate, man. I think that'll look great and work perfectly for your needs. Can't wait to see it in there and I'd be very curious to see a size comparison.

Making progress! Glad we gave you a hard time. ;P

Hope your chest feels better soon... sucks getting old, doesn't it? lol I just threw my back out last night and I don't even know what I did.

Yeah, there was a thread at the end of last year that we hashed that out in.

Schools: Silver Dollars, Clown Loaches, Marbled Headstanders
    Sailfin Pleco
American Cichlids (one each): oscar, gold severum, salvini, blue acara, nicaragua cichlid, chocolate cichlid, convict

I'll be getting the schoolers first, starting with the clown loaches, then I'll give them time to grow before I add the cichlids.

I know, right? I was playing racquetball with my buddy when we collided and I kinda got shoved into the wall... and then my ribs hurt. Didn't seem like much at the time but it's just shy of two weeks later and it's still on the mend. Stuff never used to take this long to heal up.

lol, isn't that the truth. Whatever you do, don't twist your ankles... they'll never be the same.
