  1. Default Help identifying tetra

Hey all. We just picked up some new tetra from our LFS but they were marked as "blue neon tetra". I thought I had seen green neons before, but not blue cuz the standard neons are blue. I looked on the species list here and didn't see these. I am OCD about properly identifying my fish so I need to know if these are a different strain or if they are just neons bred for specific traits. They look just like standard neons except they don't have the half red stripe on the back half of their body, and the blue stripe is more green than my regular neons. Other than that exactly the same. Just curious. Thx all.

I too have seen them but my tank is full. Here is some info I found on the net about them. Seems info on these guys isn't very popular.

Hope this helps ID your new find.

nice, thanks strider. Glad to find out I'm not the only one who couldn't find much info on these guys. They are pretty cool. They behave like the Neons do except they seem to swim in a tighter school and also school more often than the neons. Strange thing is I had been told by more than one person that different species of neon wouldn't inter-school, but since getting these guys both our embers and our standards are schooling with them all over the place. I don't know if that's a result of the bigger tank or the addition, but they didn't seem to do it in the bigger tank the first day and a half they were in there (before we added the new blues). As far as I'm concerned they are well worth the $2 a pop we paid.

I too have read that tetras like to school with their own kind for the most part but my Cardinals and Neons are tight. The embers I have seem to keep to their own species. The green fire tetras mingle between both above schools.

"Green Neons" are awsome fish, I found them for the first time at the LFS, they only had nine I bought all of them, one died but I was able to buy ten on line now the school of 18 swim happly with my other teras in my 75 gal tank.

Like you said they have less red then regular neons but their blue, IMO, is more brilliant. They also are less shy then reg neons schooling with the rummy noses in bottom layer than with the rasboras in the upper layer. They are not shy at dinner time either.

Yep that's them alright. Thanks for linkin the pic. I have made the exact same observations about them. The stripe is deff more pronounced. I've also noticed that in the morning when they turn their colors back on, they turn the blue on and then it takes a while to turn green. In those first few minutes the stripe is a brilliant purple. I like these little guys quite a bit more than our standard neons.

So do I, they are not as delicate as puplications make them out to be and thier fast growing.
