Did you condition your water before adding it to the tank?

Yeah I conditioned the water. The ammonia seems to be going down though. I ended up doing a small water change and getting some gold fish to keep it going while we are gone. I plan to give them back when we are done.

Ammonia goes down toward the beginning of a fishless cycle, too... without traceable nitrites. It could be you do have some bacteria, but it's not enough to show up on your tests.
