Sorry to say it all depends. I used to have a betta in a community tank and he was okay...for a while. Not sure about a pair in a community, I would think that would cause some aggression problems with the male.
    8 tanks running now:
    1x 220 gallon, 2x55 gallon, 1x40 gallon long, 1x29 gallon, 1x20 gallon long, 1x5.5 gallon, 1x2 gallon
Gouramis, barbs, rasboras, plecos, corys, tetras, fancy guppies, swordtails, ottos, rainbow shark, upside-down catfish, snails, and Max and Sparkles the bettas.

Female bettas are real peaceful. No problems with those, but if you had a pair of bettas the male might constantly be chasing the female and if it's a small tank it might stress the other fish.

Well...I started my 'Betta Experiement' back in January of this year.

I have 1 male CT and 3 females in my 25g community tank.

I have no aggression issues so far.

My tank has lots of vegetation, esp. on top...I think that helps define territories. But all 4 bettas will hang out together.

Female bettas are not always peaceful. Not all sororities are successful because of this. They recommend having at least 4-6 females minimum to lessen the aggression and spread it out more. As well as many many hiding places and plants.

Some females have to be removed because they are just plain mean and will tear into other females. I'm adopting one that I'm getting in the mail tomorrow because of this. The owner removed her from the sorority for being so vicious; and ran out of usable space to keep her.

So, some people may have incredible luck with females. But usually you have to keep a close eye on them till you are sure of their personality around other females and fish in general.

I have a female right now that nearly ate one of my ramshorns. No more snailies for her!
