Glass tanks need to be supported around their perimeter, The weight is where the frame of the tank is. The VISUAL weight of any extraneous stand on either side of it is inconsequential.

Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

Yeah I have a stand for my 20g tall that goes right to the edge..the previous owner had the tank for a long time on the same stand. Looks flimsy but it's tough.

Good. Cause I'm picking one up tomorrow : ) have to wait until we move to set everything up, unfortunately though. So can't even start cycling for another 3 weeks at the least :/ but guess that gives me plenty of time to find out exactly what I want.

In a 10 gallon, I recommend only a few fish if you really prefer quality over quantity - mainly a pair of guppies or other live breeders (swordtails, mollies, platies), a few dwarf gourami's, 8-10 tetra species, 4-6 zebra danio, up to 6 barb species, or even a few dwarf puffers (very hard to find nowadays!).

Bear in mind that each species has its own temperament and water needs and that tetras and puffers are generally the harder of the bunch to care for. However, this shouldn't stop a keen enthusiast :) Good luck!
Peace be with you and your fish.

I'm sorry AquariumZen, the OP should definitely NOT get a "couple of" dwarf gouramis in a 10g.

Tetras are a beginner fish...not hard at all to care for most types if you have a properly cycled tank.

Puffers are a BAD idea for a beginner.

Please do your research before recommending anything.

    +1 To Azurescriber

Also, Danios are not appropriate for a 10G tank either as they are extremely active fish that require more 'room to run' than the footprint of a 10g provides.

Thanks guys, yeah I really do want to take my time with this and make sure I am making the absolute best decisions. So I apologize in advance for the many questions I may have!

Speaking of stock I have 3 final choices: http://www.aqadvisor.com/AquStockIma...:200909300033:

    second choice: http://www.aqadvisor.com/AquStockIma...:200909300164:

And the third will just be all barbs (probably 8?) and 1 of the bristlnose pleco's or another that is appropriate for my tank size.

Looks good! Remember to get a filter for 2x your gallonage.

The only thing you need to worry about with that stocking is how your barbs interact with the other fish, they can be very nippy. I would add a few more to the school to help avoid problems, but have a back-up plan. :)
