Okay, will cycle with my betta, and do what everyone says. Whew. I had no idea I had to be a chemist, biologist, botanist, zoologist, and a bit obsessive to keep a pet betta. Live and learn. What a great community, I see why people become aquageeks. Thanks everybody!

I'd be curious as to why you suspect Velvet. Velvet takes on an appearance of a light brown goldfish coloring on their backs. If the tank lights are off, and you turn a flashlight on the fish, it will tend to glow some. But Velvet thrives in lighted tanks and why they should remain dark during it's presence and treated as you would for ick.

It would be a shame to put this fish under medications without knowing for sure he even has the disease.

The pleco has highly visible velvet, I noticed the coloring and thought it odd and went online and saw it. Then I saw that my betta's face wasn't as dark as before, and I turned off the lights, shone a flashlight on him and there are two faint bronze-gold patches. I thought I was imagining it but my non-imaginative husband also saw the patches and agrees it looks like the ones on the pleco,

Adding that pleco did you no favors. Not only did he not belong in the tank, he gave you a host of problems that now the betta has to contend with.

Ick Guard is what I'd use. On both of them. Lights off.

I'd like to reiterate, your tank is only big enough for your one betta. When you are cycled, there are other, non-fish options to add to the tank, but not for a long time.

In addition to all the great advice above, see if you can get some used filter media from the petstore or a friend, or even some old gravel from an established healthy tank. Bring it home in a bag of tank water and add it to your filter. It will speed up the cycling time considerably.

No. Owners who are unwilling to do research and just go on store advice is only slightly funny the first time. After the first dozen I'm not laughing. After the first 500 you just shake your head at it.
3 potted plants and 6 strings of plastic do not make a planted tank!

We all make mistakes when starting this hobby. I doubt anyone here is mistake proof.
