I could be really, really off but that could be Mondo Grass, which is often sold as an aquatic plant but is actually not.

Actually it looks a lot like it.

I think that Mondo grass is a little bit skinnier in leaf width and it sold much taller. This looks like some kind of sword.

Is there a thick root system?

    !!!

    Dwarf Sagittaria AKA Sagittaria subulata.

  5. Default

    it does have thick roots.

It looks like mondo grass, now that I have had a examples to compare to. Is this bad to have in an aquarium fully submerged?

Put it in a flower pot. It will not grow underwater anyway. Mondo is used for around borders and driveways in the yard.

It was probably sold at the fish store for terrariums.

Mondo Grass. Works great in modern landscapes, not so great in aquariums. If you live in zone 6 or higher, you can plant it outside. I made the same mistake thinking it was Saggitaria. Be careful, a good amount of those colorful plants in tanks aren't actually aquatic. Makes it even more confusing when they sell terrestrial plants that look like aquatics.
