Indian Woods Angel, I understand what you are saying and completely agree. I do frequent the independent stores. I am lucky enough to have one really good one and one exceptional one near me. They are a bit more expensive but their fish are far more healthy and well kept. Is there really a difference in price if you have to keep going back to the store to get the cheaper fish replaced? They will source fish for me if I ask and I am lucky enough that one can custom build tanks for me. Because I appreciate the way they treat their livestock and for the service I receive, I will gladly pay a bit extra.
And I buy my dog food from an independent dealer who delivers to my door.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I would buy all my fish from a ma and pa if we had one. I did when it was here but I just didn't buy the test kits. :) There's a store the other direction from me, also a two hours drive, that I plan to go to next. I heard it's a nice store and is a ma and pa. Only recently learned of it.

No one here North of Flint, Lansing or Detroit seems to be into keeping tropicals much. They all say because there are no suppliers here for buying fish or tanks. In the case here, Meijers or Walmart didn't put them out of business. They never started.

The only two places I'll buy fish are both independently-owned and operated. One is a family-owned store from whom I purchase most of my fish as well as supplies -- when I can get them. The second I use when I can't find what I need from the first one, and I've recently begun buying fish there, as well, as they also keep them well maintained and healthy. Both have knowledeable people and I often hear them giving good advice to customers buying fish and aquariums for the first time.

The only time I ever bought fish from PetCo, the associate netted them out of the tank and dropped them several inches from the net into the bag of water instead of gently letting them swim into the bag. Anyone who has ever dove into a pool from a diving board knows the impact of hitting water from a great distance -- it can be like hitting concrete. They crowded several fish into one bag, and they failed to oxygenate the bag properly, and all the fish died before I got them home. This was my first time buying fish since I started keeping them again, and after that, I never purchased fish from PetCo again.

I do what I can to support these two independents, as I need for them to remain in business and I appreciate the service I get from them. I have referred other customers to them, and shall continue to do so.

Drifting off on a tangent a bit... I remember when I first started keeping fish, half of my friends had a tank as well, even if it was just a simple small tank with three guppies.

These days it seems like there's far, far fewer people who keep an aquarium at their home. Do you guys see the same in your country?

Lady Hobbs, I meant no offense. You can't buy from a store that doesn't exist. I am lucky enough to live in a city that has two good stores. We also have a big box store, but I don't go there.

Wijnands, I can't say with any certainty that there are more or less people keeping fish in their homes today because in real life I am somewhat of a recluse and always have been. But I can say there is a large city about half an hour away from me and another even larger city about forty five minutes from me and it seems they have independent fish stores on every corner and both cities have fish clubs. I know this isn't a great way to get the answer to your question, but there must be many people keeping tanks and some of those in their homes if so many stores can stay open for so long.

Interesting. Over here fish clubs are struggling to get members younger than 45.

I can certainly say that only one other person I know, personally, has kept an aquarium... and it was only for frogs. They all died about 9yrs ago and he has since stopped keeping anything aquatic related. Now, I'm the only one, besides my sister, who keeps fish within my circle of friends/family. That being said, I didn't know many people who kept fish when i was a kid, either...

    And none was taken. *hugs*

I was actually responding to Indian Woods saying people would rather pay 30% less at the big box stores than go to a good pet shop that has better fish. I'd shop at a ma and pa in a heartbeat before going to a department store to buy my fish........who never change their selections and have the same o', same o' week after week.

Big Box stores don't need my $100 but it might help the local guy keep his doors open. But in the same sense, I will also not pay 2x or 3x for something that I know I can get cheaper online or elsewhere in the equipment line. In the case of the store that closed down here, if they charged $47 for a test kit, I would hate to go in there to buy a canister filter. Dang. If they did that with everything, no wonder their doors closed.

I'm lucky that I have a small family owned SW LFS where I live. The owner is great, he is always willing to give me a hand and point me in the right direction when I'm trying to research new fish or corals. I know I pay about 10 to 15% higher prices when I buy from him, but I also get his advice and help when I need it. I'll never have to deal with a manufacture on a warrenty issue as long as I buy from him. You just can't find that level of service in any big box store, or at least I have yet to find a big box store like that in any city I have lived in (Canada and the USA).

    I count myself as lucky
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
