really expensive fish
I went to a LFS across town yesterday that I had never been to before. I was really impressed by how nice this place was. All the tanks were spottless, nothing like the petco and two lfs close to my house where you have to wade through the dead and sick fish to maybe find something you might be able to save. They also had some beautiful display tanks, including the phone booth tank from the tv show "Tanked". One of the display reefs had some fish I had never seen in person before including a borbon anthia, a Helfrich’s firefish, and a pair of platinum clowns. As these were in a store tank I didn't bother to ask if they were for sale, but they also had a black tang for sale for $700. At this point in my fish keeping career I wouldn't dream of spending this on a fish but I know there are many hard core keepers out there who have the skill and equipment to safely keep this fish, so it made me wonder, what's the most you would or have spent on a single fish?

asian arowanas. I have a few and they are easily $1000 a piece. they are even microchipped like most dogs are. luckily, I got a great deal on them (although it was a very long drive, 6 hours roundtrip). superreds and golds can easily be $5000. certain fw stingrays also are very expensive ($1000+)

Most I would spend? Not allot. I think about $30 is the most I've ever spent on an individual. I made a big mail order purchase of a few fish with overnight shipping that was close to $200, thats the most I have ever splurged on one purchase. Im not into SW though.
Bluegrass aquatics has a rare gar on sale for $15,000 right now, I think that's the most expensive I've ever seen."At some point you aren't making the animal more dead...You are just making a bigger mess." - Demjor19

I wa really surprised at some of the fresh water rare fish prices, but I guess that makes sence because of the very limited territory they some of those fish can be found in.

Freshwater-$75
Saltwater-$125
Most expensive fish I currently own is a $50 A.orbicularis...I paid that for the fish when it was about 1" long
That is about where I tap out on fish prices...Id have to *really* want a fish to spend more than the above. The black tang you saw was probably an Achilles, I owned one about 10 years ago...traded a breeding pair of discus for it as a small juvie. Now I would not mind to setup another large SW tank for one of those...and I probably would go a bit over $200 for small one. But that would be about the only marine fish that would con me into that price range.150G SA Cichlids|100G Planted Community|50G Reef|20G Tanganyikan|10G Divided Bettas|10G Nano Fish

I'm starting to feel a little better about my spending habits
FW - $50 to $60
SW - $190 to $200
I can't remember the exact amounts, but they are inside that rangeIf you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

My son paid $75 for a saltwater fish, tossed it in the tank and 3 seconds later another fish killed it. (Another one who didn't do research.) LOL

That was my next guess...ehhh yeah Id never pay that much for one of those. Especially when the yellows are much nicer looking and cheap

I've been considering getting a Cockatoo Apisto pair as the showcase fish for my tank. They go about $50 for the males. That's probably the most I would spend on a single fish. And I'm definitely holding off until I know this tank is stellar.
