Thread: Betta Bowl

  1. Default Betta Bowl

So I am generally against having a betta tank as I live in Colorado and it's very dry (this year especially) and it is a daily chore to pour small amounts of water to keep it leveled off and preventing evaporation rings from forming around the top. However, that being said, my wife and I found a very cool bowl with a narrow(ish) opening and, since it was her desire, I don't have to do any maintenance, save for the setup. It is actually become a great centerpiece for our dining table. This past winter wasn't so bad, but this summer dryness really keeps her adding water. It's incredible how quickly it goes here. Anyway, here's the tank. This is month 10 and the betta is really cool.

That's a really neat looking little tank! How many gallons and what are you using for filtration and heat?

Our house stays at a pretty stable 75 degrees and my wife uses water from one of our other tanks to do a water change weekly, which is only about a quarter gallon I think. There is nothing but a light on this guy and he's been happy for almost a year. The light is just a cheapo she pulled off of a mini terrarium and does put out a little heat so I imagine that the tank temp fluctuates between 73 and 78F. It's about 1.25 gallons I think. I'm not really sure.

Why would you use old tank water for the betta. If you aren't gonna use a filter the least you could give him is clean fresh water every day.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

You obviously didn't read the whole post. He does get new water.....daily. It's only once a week that he gets a larger change.

I did read the whole post, and I still say why would you put dirty water in his bowl? If you aren't going to use a filter the least you could do is add clean fresh water every day. Also if the bowl does actually get down to 73 degrees that's a bit cool for a betta and could lead to illness.

Well it's been almost a year and he has had not one problem. I repeat: NO PROBLEMS!

Yeah, betta's are pretty tough fish and can deal with substandard living better and a bit longer than many other fish. Then one day out of the blue all that cold dirty water takes its toll and the fish dies for no "apparent" reason to the unknowing owner.

Please do a little research on the minimum requirements for keeping bettas. It is obvious that you have not done so or I am sure you would see why your current setup and maintenance routine is not adequate for the long term health and well being of your fish.
